MALDEF Reacts to New California Media National Poll of Latino Reactions to President Bush's Immigration Proposal

Calls on President Bush to clarify that Latino immigrants can become permanent members of American society, with equal rights

Today's New California Media poll found that most Latinos are in favor of President Bush's proposal until they receive more information and realize it might not provide a path to permanent status, at which point the opposition doubles. In reaction, MALDEF immigrants' rights attorney Katherine Culliton, stated:

"As MALDEF has expressed to the White House, President Bush's proposal is a welcome step in the right direction, but it needs to be improved. Unless there is a clear path to permanent status, this generation of immigrants, many of whom are Latino, will be an underclass and that would not be acceptable. Today's poll shows that Latino voters are very sophisticated, understand immigration law well, and consider comprehensive immigration reform is a critical issue.

"MALDEF urges President Bush to improve his proposal and clarify that there will be a path to permanent status, so that families can be unified and this generation of immigrants is treated respectfully and with equality. We sincerely hope President Bush will take the next step, and provide a clear path to permanent status that truly reflects family values. Latino immigrants deserve the chance to become full members of our society."

A national nonprofit organization founded 1968, MALDEF promotes and protects the rights of Latinos through advocacy, community education and outreach, leadership development, higher education scholarships and when necessary, through the legal system.
