Data from ImpreMedia and Latino Decisions that spans the three years after Mitt Romney’s loss detail the magnitude and depth of the reaction to the 2016 campaign.

POPE FRANCIS WADES INTO U.S. IMMIGRATION MORASS WITH BORDER TRIP / JIM YARDLEY / THE NEW YORK TIMES
Pope Francis is finishing his six-day trip to Mexico on Wednesday, with his final stop at Ciudad Juárez, at the border with the United States. He will not step into the United States, but he will certainly step directly into the angry American political debate about immigration. Which is exactly what he wants. Few issues matter more to Francis than the global, polarizing issue of the plight of migrants. In the United States, Donald J. Trump promises to make Mexico build a border wall (...)

MIXED MARRIAGES ARE CHANGING THE WAY WE THINK ABOUT OUR RACE / JEFF GUO / THE WASHINGTON POST
For all the talk about immigrants refusing to embrace American ways — a defining controversy of this GOP presidential race — the evidence has been scant. The National Academies of Sciences deflated most of the myths in a definitive report last year. Today’s immigrants are more educated and better English speakers than their predecessors, and they are far less likely to commit a crime compared to the native-born. They are quickly becoming part of American communities. In fact,

TRADING GREEN CARDS FOR PASSPORTS HELPS ALL AMERICANS / CHICAGO TRIBUNE
Almost 9 million of America's 13 million legal permanent residents are eligible to become U.S. citizens -- yet haven't. It's worth trying to increase that number, both for these individuals and for the country they've made their home. A healthy democracy needs people to be engaged. Permanent residents can't be fully involved unless they're citizens, with the rights and duties this entails. Historically, the U.S. has been unusually good at merging successive waves of immigrants (...)
