The number of immigrants in the U.S. illegally has held steady since the Great Recession ended, totaling 11.1 million in 2014, 11.2 million in 2012 and 11.3 million in 2009, according to a study released Tuesday by Pew Research Center. NUMBER OF UNAUTHORIZED IMMIGRANTS IN ILLINOIS DROPS 10 PERCENT, STUDY SHOWS /MARWA ELTAGOURI AND NEREIDA MORENO / CHICAGO TRIBUNE
The number of unauthorized immigrants residing in Illinois dropped by 10 percent, or 50,000 people, between 2009 and 2014 — something experts say has been key to Chicago's recent population loss. "So much of the population growth in this region was based on legal and undocumented immigration. This closes the plug on the growth we've had," said Rob Paral, a Chicago-based demographer who advises nonprofits and community groups.

BOMBING SUSPECT’S HOMETOWN IS A MAGNET FOR IMMIGRANTS / LIZ ROBBINS / THE NEW YORK TIMES
Along the commercial corridor of Elmora Avenue, Salvadoran pupusas are sold next to kosher California rolls and across the street from a salon where three Colombians, a Cuban and a Uruguayan cut hair. Past Las Américas Bakery, the owner of another salon is the proud daughter of southern Italian immigrants. And on that same street, which decades ago used to be populated by Orthodox Jews, there stands an outlier: First American Fried Chicken, owned and operated by the Rahami family, immigrants from Afghanistan. Afghans are not a particularly large group living in Elizabeth.

HERE’S HOW WE CAN BE CONFIDENT THAT THERE ARE 11 MILLION UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS IN THE U.S. / PHILIP BUMP / THE WASHINGTON POST
On Tuesday, Pew updated its estimate of the number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S., estimating that the overall total remained slightly above 11 million through 2014. (The chart below has been updated.) That makes up about a quarter of all immigrants in the United States. How can they be certain of those numbers? Read on. At the core of Donald Trump's proposals on immigration is that he hopes to crack down on immigrants here illegally. But Trump repeatedly claims not to know how many people that is.

KIDS FACING DEPORTATION CAN'T SUE TO GET LAWYERS, COURT SAYS / KARTIKAY MEHROTRA / CHICAGO TRIBUNE
Undocumented immigrant children can't sue the U.S. government to have lawyers represent them in deportation hearings, an appeals court ruled. Tuesday's ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco reversed a judge's decision last year rejecting the government's bid to throw out the lawsuit. The case was brought by the American Civil Liberties Union amid concerns over the deportation of child immigrants, many of them fleeing violence in Central America. The appeals court said the lower-court judge didn't have jurisdiction to rule on the case of a boy from El Salvador escaping gang threats at home.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION TO US HAS 'STABILIZED,' ANALYSIS SAYS / MICHAEL MATZA / LOS ANGELES TIMES
The GOP presidential nominee, Donald Trump surfs a wave of anger over illegal immigration. "People are pouring across the southern border," he asserts repeatedly. A report released Tuesday says otherwise: The population of Mexicans living illegally in the United States decreased 1.1 million from its peak in 2007 to 5.8 million in 2014, and the number of undocumented immigrants overall 11.1 million hit its lowest point since 2010. Based on a Pew Research Center analysis of census and other government data, the report finds that illegal immigration in general "has stabilized since the end of the Great Recession."

MISSING LINK IN STORY ABOUT FAMILIES SEPARATED BY BORDER FENCE / JAN MACMICHAEL, / LOS ANGELES TIMES
The Berlin Wall was ostensibly build to keep East Germans from fleeing to the West. But make no mistake, I believe the Berlin Wall was also built to keep out West German ideas about freedom. Stories about the West German standard of living were not wanted in the East. Our wall is there to keep people out; there is no worry about keeping people in, although currently it seems more are leaving than coming. The fear that they bring crime is refuted by the facts, it is a red herring.

'CHICKEN SHACKS' ARE LIFELINE FOR NEW JERSEY'S AFGHAN IMMIGRANTS / THE NEW YORK TIMES
They dot the landscape in this working-class New Jersey city, popping up every few blocks with names like U.S. Fried Chicken, Royal Fried Chicken and New York Fried Chicken and Burger and giving immigrants a foothold in a new country. One of these fried chicken restaurants, First American Fried Chicken, was thrust into the international spotlight on Monday when authorities arrested the owner's son, Ahmad Rahami, after a shootout with police. Rahami is suspected of planting several explosives in New York City and New Jersey,

SKILLED IMMIGRANTS WASTING THEIR TALENTS IN CANADA / ALIA DHARSSI / CALGARY HERALD
For Brazilian pediatrician Iraj Khalili Nasrabadi, one of the hardest parts of flipping burgers in a Calgary McDonald’s in 2015 was hearing news of rural Albertans desperate for family doctors. He would have gladly served them if given the chance. After arriving in Canada in 2010, Nasrabadi passed three medical exams required to work in Canada and spent 18 months shadowing a Canadian doctor. He also became a Canadian citizen. But he hadn’t secured a residency – the last step for becoming a doctor in Canada – after three years of applying to programs across the country, even though he had 16 years of experience as a doctor in Brazil.

BREXIT BACKER SAYS BANK FREEDOM STARTS BY EMBRACING EU RULES / JOHN GLOVER AND SILLA BRUSH / CHICAGO TIRBUNE
A leading Brexit backer says Britain's path to deliverance from the constraints of Brussels begins with imposing sweeping new European Union rules on the country's financial markets. The U.K. should ensure that the EU market-rule overhaul known as MiFID II enters into force as intended in January 2018 to avoid complicating the government's talks on secession from the bloc, said Jacob Rees-Mogg, a Conservative lawmaker in Parliament's Treasury Committee and an outspoken Brexit supporter. Rees-Mogg said now isn't the time for the Treasury and regulators to alter the rules as they put them in place in the U.K. over the next year.

MIGRANTS ARE MAIN TARGET OF FRENCH PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES / THE WASHINGTON POST
Temporary home to thousands of migrants trying to reach Britain, the French city of Calais is a major battlefield for presidential candidates who are seizing on fears of immigration in campaigning for spring elections — and following in the footsteps of far-right leader Marine Le Pen. Former President Nicolas Sarkozy, competing in the conservative primary in November, visited Calais on Wednesday. Sarkozy didn’t go to the makeshift camp known as the “jungle.” Instead he met security forces in charge of protecting the ferry port and preventing migrants from entering the area. He made no public comment during the visit.

PRIVATELY SPONSORED SYRIAN REFUGEES LEFT IN LIMBO / IAN URQUHART / THE STAR
The Prime Minister has attracted a lot of positive attention at the United Nations this week for Canada’s response to the plight of the Syrian refugees. As he told the UN conference, Canada has now taken in 31,000 of them. The applause Justin Trudeau received was well deserved. But it should not be unreserved. Overlooked in the refugee numbers game is that, after achieving its initial target of 25,000 refugees admitted by the end of February, the government left thousands of privately sponsored Syrian families in the lurch.
