LATINOS IN CALIFORNIA HAVE ONE BIG REASON TO VOTE: DONALD TRUMP / SOPHIA BOLLAG / LOS ANGELES TIMES
Galvanized to vote in the presidential race by Donald Trump’s anti-immigration rhetoric, Latinos in California are expected to turn out in large numbers in November and have considerable influence on down-ballot races and statewide propositions. At nearly 39% of the population, Latinos are the largest ethnic group in the state. At the polls, however, they are typically underrepresented compared with other minority groups. But Latino voters turned out in record numbers during the 2016 primary, a good sign for general election turnout, said Mindy Romero,

REPUBLICANS CONTEND WITH TRUMP FACTOR AMONG HISPANIC VOTERS / JULIE BYKOWICZ / HOUSTON CHRONICLE
Berta Delgado told the Spanish-speaking conservative activists at her door that she is "100 por ciento" Republican, and agreed with their assessment that Democratic Senate candidate Patrick Murphy is too liberal. She said she'd vote for Sen. Marco Rubio. That is, if she votes. Delgado said she's so disgusted by the presidential race that she might stay home in bed on Election Day. A few blocks away in the same Cuban-American enclave, Ernesto Gil assured the activists that he, too, favors Rubio. But due to Donald Trump, he said,

NO, THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT THOUSANDS OF NONCITIZENS ARE ILLEGALLY VOTING AND SWINGING ELECTIONS / JOSEPH TANFANI / LOS ANGELES TIMES
As Donald Trump maintains his incendiary attacks on the legitimacy of the election, one of his favorite themes has been the claim that the results will be tainted by the votes of millions of people in the U.S. illegally. “They are letting people pour into the country so they can go ahead and vote,” he said this month, in a meeting with the head of the union representing border patrol agents. “And believe me, there's a lot going on,” Trump said at a rally. “People that have died 10 years ago are still voting. Illegal immigrants are voting.”

HILLARY'S SECRET WEAPON IN FLORIDA: NEW PUERTO RICAN IMMIGRANTS / CHICAGO TRIBUNE
Last Wednesday morning contained an unusual landmark in the endgame of the 2016 election season: the first time in months that Central Floridians could confidently buy a plantain without being hassled about their level of civic engagement. Throughout the year, their region has been overrun with clipboard-grasping canvassers listening for the distinctively accented Spanish of native Puerto Ricans. While in most states registration drives focus on college campuses and African-American neighborhoods - the standard marketplaces where canvassers find non-registrants who skew Democratic -

IF IMMIGRATION CAN’T BE STOPPED, MAYBE IT CAN BE MANAGED / EDUARDO PORTER / THE NEW YORK TIMES
Can anything be done about illegal immigration? Donald J. Trump’s proposal to end illegal immigration — to build a supposedly impregnable wall — is a fake solution. For all intents and purposes, the wall is already there: a fence across large stretches of the southwestern border complemented by drones, sensors and a small army of agents. It has already failed. The federal government spent more than $200 billion in the last 20 years on immigration enforcement. And the population of unauthorized immigrants swelled to 11 million over the period. Maybe the answer, instead, lies in another direction.

HISPANIC WOMAN CLAIMS CO-WORKERS USED TRUMP IMAGES TO HARASS / RYAN J. FOLEY / HOUSTON CHRONICLE
A Hispanic woman says her white co-workers at an Iowa claims office used images of Donald Trump to racially harass her for months after they learned she was angered by his description of Mexican immigrants as rapists, according to a civil rights lawsuit she filed against her company. Alexandra Avila's co-workers at Sedgwick Claims Management Services — where they administered benefits for Wal-Mart employees — began calling her an "illegal immigrant" even though she's a natural-born U.S. citizen, according to the lawsuit filed Monday in Iowa district court.

SWISS CABINET SEEKS COMPROMISE APPROACH TO EU IMMIGRATION CURBS / THE NEW YORK TIMES
The Swiss government opposes a referendum campaign that would overturn a 2014 vote to impose quotas on immigration from the European Union, it said on Wednesday, suggesting instead a compromise approach whose details will emerge only next year. The move buys Switzerland more time to handle the fraught subject of implementing the binding 2014 referendum without infringing too much on EU citizens' right to free movement, a condition for enhanced Swiss access to the single market. Organizers of the Raus aus der Sackgasse (RASA)
