TRUMP BLAMES HER DEATH ON AN IMMIGRANT. BUT WHY DID HER KILLER HAVE A GUN IN THE FIRST PLACE? / ROBIN ABCARIAN / LOS ANGELES TIMES
For more than two years, I have puzzled over the tragic death of Kathryn Steinle at the hands of an irregular immigrant named Jose Ines Garcia Zarate. You may not remember Garcia Zarate抯 name, but you surely remember Steinle, a joyful and well-traveled 32-year-old California native who became the unwitting face of the border security hysteria that drove so much of the last Republican presidential campaign. On a soft summer evening in 2015, Garcia Zarate found a stolen gun on San Francisco抯 Pier 14. It went off. Steinle, who was strolling nearby, died. Garcia Zarate, 45, who is also known as Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, among other crimes.

HOW LONG CAN THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION PREVENT A 17-YEAR-OLD IMMIGRANT FROM GETTING AN ABORTION? CASE TESTS LIMIT / DAVID LAUTER / LOS ANGELES TIMES
The ACLU asked a federal appeals court Sunday night to reenter the case of a 17-year-old pregnant immigrant in detention whose request for an abortion has been blocked by federal officials. The woman, identified in court as Jane Doe to protect her privacy, has been held in a federal detention center in south Texas since crossing the border irregularly in September. She is 15 weeks pregnant and has been seeking an abortion for several weeks. She got approval from a Texas state judge, which the state's law requires for minors who don't have a parent's permission for the procedure. But under policies adopted by the Trump administration, federal officials have tried to block any pregnant minors held in immigrant detention from getting abortions.

The irregular immigrant whose case turned Massachusetts into a 搒anctuary state is behind bars yet again. Police say he committed a stunning daylight robbery by taking a wheelchair-bound woman, slapping her and stealing the $2,000 she had just carried out of the bank. Sreynuon Lunn had been free on the streets of Boston because his home country won抰 take him back, leaving immigration officers no choice but to release him under a 2001 U.S. Supreme Court ruling. His case gained headlines over the summer when the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that state and local authorities could no longer legally hold immigrants for pickup by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

ACCIDENTALLY TURNED MY DAD INTO IMMIGRATION SERVICES / VIVIANA ANDAZOLA MARQUEZ / THE NEW YORK TIMES
This month my father and I drove to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Centennial, Colo., for a routine visit. I offered to drive because my dad was too nervous and excited to take the wheel. 揌ow long have we waited for this day? he asked me. He had been told to come in for a final interview before he could get approved for legal permanent residency. But the meeting turned into a nightmare. Several hours after we arrived, I found myself alone, in disbelief. My dad had been detained and was facing deportation proceedings. My father is undocumented but has lived in the United States since 1998. He has raised four children, all American citizens, on income from construction work.
