LIVING AS A LATINO IN U.S. DURING TRUMP ERA IS SURREAL / RUBEN NAVARRETTE / ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL
For Latinos, the one-year anniversary of Donald Trump’s election marks the day when a demagogue who treated the nation’s largest minority like a pinata was rewarded with the highest office in the land. On the campaign trail, Trump’s slights against Latinos included: accusing Mexico of sending people who are “bringing drugs” and “bringing crime”; promising a “deportation force” modeled on President Eisenhower’s 1954 repatriation effort known as Operation Wetback; challenging a provision of the Constitution that says U.S.-born children of undocumented immigrants – what Trump called “anchor babies” – are U.S. citizens; insulting Jeb Bush’s Mexican-born wife when he retweeted “#JebBush has to like the Mexican illegals because of his wife” even though Columba Bush came here legally; glibly calling Mexican immigrants “bad hombres”; and making the racist claim that Gonzalo Curiel, a U.S.-born federal judge, could not be fair in adjudicating a lawsuit against Trump University because the judge is “Mexican.”

DACA RECIPIENT HELD IN IMMIGRATION DETENTION / JASON BUCH / SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS
Immigration activists are calling for the release of a 20-year-old with a prosthetic leg who’s a recipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that provides some young immigrants work permits but is being held in a detention center. Felipe Abonza Lopez, 20, is being held in an immigration detention facility in Pearsall. In a letter from the detention center distributed by the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services, Abonza wrote that he’s in pain because he isn’t receiving receiving medical treatment. Border Patrol agents stopped Abonza and four other people, two from Mexico and two from Honduras, near Uvalde on Oct. 12. In a statement, the agency said the four others were in the country illegally and they were arrested along with Abonza “during the course of a human smuggling investigation.”

NONPROFIT PLEDGES TO MATCH WHATEVER SACRAMENTO SPENDS ON LEGAL AID FOR UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS / BENJY EGEL / SACRAMENTO BEE
The Vera Institute for Justice will help fund legal counsel for those facing deportation from Sacramento and 10 other U.S. cities and counties, the nonprofit announced. The Sacramento City Council unanimously agreed to set aside up to $300,000 in May to fight deportation through a network of nonprofit groups providing legal, educational and faith-based services. Inclusion of Sacramento in the Vera Institute’s Safety and Fairness for Everyone Cities Network means the organization will match whatever sum the city spends. The Vera Institute will also offer technical expertise and support, including helping Sacramento share best practices with other jurisdictions and data analysis to evaluate the network’s impact.

REP. GREEN RETIRES, POTENTIALLY SHAKING UP HISPANIC DISTRICT / WILL WEISSERT / THE WASHINGTON POST
Long-serving Democratic Rep. Gene Green — a key reason Houston is now America’s largest Hispanic city without a Hispanic member of Congress — announced Monday that he won’t seek re-election, the sixth Texas congressman to give up his seat this year. The 70-year-old said in a statement Monday that he’s “confident that I still have the support of my constituents and would be successful if I ran for another term” but added that he wanted to spend more time with his family. Green’s district snakes through mostly working-class areas of north and east Houston and will remain safely Democratic. That opens the door for Latinos in city politics or the Texas Legislature to jump into the party’s primary in March to replace him. Exactly who will do so isn’t immediately clear since the filing deadline is still about a month away.

THE MYTH OF ECONOMIC PROSPERITY THROUGH MASS IMMIGRATION / RACHEL MARSDEN / THE BALTIMORE SUN
Those of us living in Western democracies keep hearing it over and over again from our politicians: To compete economically, we must submit to mass immigration. It's long past time to dispel this destructive myth. The mass immigration con is typically peddled for the same reason that you need an accountant to help do your taxes. By tying the issue to economics, politicians are trying to make it too complex for laypeople to know when they're being scammed. While they're exploiting your human decency with their spiel about the greater economic good, these government pickpockets are reaching into your trousers (or into your bank account) for more cash. Hey, man, a gubmint’s gotta eat! U.S. President Donald Trump isn't buying it, though.

PHOTO PROJECT IN LAS VEGAS AIMS TO PUBLICIZE IMMIGRATION REFORM / JESSIE BEKKER / LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
The oversized faces of undocumented Las Vegans and their supporters now adorn the side of a local building, part of an art project aimed at bringing awareness to immigration reform issues. “Inside Out: Dreamers” is part of a national campaign that is sending mobile photo booths in buses to 30 cities across the country to photograph undocumented people on 36-by-53-inch posters and hang the pictures on building exteriors. The bus set up shop Monday at the East Las Vegas Community Center, where about 45 people participated in the event. After posing for photos in the booths, their images were hung on the exterior of the center. “The whole purpose is that we’re trying to create, through these pictures, an accurate portrait of America, and that’s one that includes Dreamers and immigrants,” said project spokesperson Paola Ramos.

WHY ARE HALF OF LATINO IMMIGRANT TV CHARACTERS PORTRAYED AS CRIMINALS? / EVA RECINOS / THE GUARDIAN
When the current administration announced that Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca) would be coming to an end, Hollywood reacted. Ava DuVernay, Shailene Woodley, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Cristela Alonzo and many others used social media and other platforms to voice their concern. DuVernay called the move a “disgusting display of prejudice, ignorance and heartlessness”. Celebrities including Woodley tweeted information about the impact of Daca with the hashtags #DefendDACA and #HeretoStay. Miranda kept it short and simple: “Okay. The Bad Man continues to do bad. Your move, Congress.” Early this year, the Opportunity Agenda analyzed TV programs that aired between 2014 and 2016 that portrayed immigrants and found that 50% of Latino immigrant characters had committed a crime of some sort.
