CALIFORNIA COUNTY CONSIDERS FIGHTING STATE'S 'SANCTUARY' LAW / AMY TAXIN / MIAMI HERALD
Leaders of Orange County, California, planned Tuesday to consider fighting a state law aimed at protecting immigrants from stepped-up deportations under the Trump administration. The backlash to the state's so-called sanctuary law comes a week after the small city of Los Alamitos in Orange County voted to opt out of the policy. The all-Republican supervisors of the Southern California county of 3.2 million people were expected to discuss passing a resolution in support of Los Alamitos and whether to join the U.S. government's lawsuit over the law, which bars police in many cases from turning over suspects to federal immigration agents for deportation.

THE LATEST: MASSACHUSETTS MAY JOIN SUIT OVER CENSUS QUESTION / MIAMI HERALD
The Latest on the 2020 census and the addition of a question on citizenship. Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin, a Democrat, tells The Associated Press that he expects his state would also join in a lawsuit against the Trump administration over the decision to include a citizenship question on the 2020 U.S. Census. Galvin called the decision an attempt to suppress the count in states such as Massachusetts that have large immigrant populations. Galvin called the addition of a citizenship question "a blatant attempt by the Trump administration to frighten minority groups away from being counted." He said he would be consulting with the state attorney general and possibly other states about filing or joining lawsuits.

A US VET FACING DEPORTATION THOUGHT HE'D JUST WALKED THROUGH AN OFFICE DOOR. IT WAS ACTUALLY MEXICO / THERESA WALDROP / CNN
A US Army veteran who served two tours in Afghanistan says he didn't realize he'd been deported to Mexico until it was too late to turn back. Speaking from Tijuana Monday, Miguel Perez told reporters that he's feeling well physically, but is "very confused." Perez was escorted across the US-Mexico border from Texas and handed over to Mexican authorities Friday, ICE said in a statement. Perez says a truck took him to an airport in Indiana. He was then flown to Brownsville, Texas, ICE said. When he got off the plane, Perez said he arrived at a "place that looked like an office." "I did not know it was already the bridge to enter the other side," he said, adding that he walked through a door that closed quickly behind him. "When I went back they told me everything is over." "Although I am free, there is not much joy in being free," Perez, 39, said.

CANADA’S IMMIGRATION SYSTEM LEAVES SOME EMPLOYERS WANTING / SARA SCHAEFER MUÑOZ / THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
Merit-based approach Trump sees as model for U.S. yields a shortage of farm and other blue-collar labor. Calgary-area farmer Ray Price has seen a steady increase in demand from Asia for his pork products in recent years but says he can’t find enough workers to expand his business. With an aging local workforce and Canada’s restrictions on lower-skilled immigrants, “we are chronically short on people,” he said. “Calgary has professionals, engineers and people like that, but what we need are people who want to learn meat processing.”

ALBERTA ATTRACTS MORE IMMIGRANTS THAN B.C., NEW CENSUS DATA SHOWS/ PAULA SIMONS/ EDMONTON JOURNAL
Traditionally, newcomers to Canada have chosen to live in Canada’s biggest cities — Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Alberta, despite its strong economy and its relatively low cost of living, was rarely their first choice. No longer. Statistics Canada census data released Wednesday shows 207,790 people immigrated to Alberta from other countries over the last census period, from 2011 to 2016. Over that same five-year period, only 175,555 immigrants moved to British Columbia. That means 17.1 per cent of all new immigrants to Canada in the last five years opted for Alberta, while 14.5 per cent chose B.C. Having overtaken B.C., we’re now neck-and-neck with Quebec, too, which attracted 215,170 new immigrants, or 17.8 per cent of the national total.

MY CREW SAVED 218 MIGRANTS FROM DROWNING – SO WHY ARE WE THE ENEMY?’ / LORENZO TONDO / THE GUARDIAN
Marc Reig does not look like a man at the centre of a storm. But that is what he Captain is, despite the fact that his ship, the migrant-rescue boat the Open Arms, is safely moored in the pretty port of Pozzallo in southern Sicily, its peace disturbed only by the waves gently lapping against its hull. When the ship, operated by the Spanish charity Proactiva Open Arms, lifted 218 desperate migrants from the leaky raft on which they had been trying to cross the rough seas of the Mediterranean last week, it seemed like a routine operation. In the last three years, more than 5,000 migrants have crossed the Mediterranean onboard the ship run by the NGO, which patrols an area outside Libyan waters. But what happened next was anything but routine. As the ship docked in Pozzallo, dozens of police closed in.
