RAISING YOUNG VOICES FOR ILLEGAL MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS / DAVID GONZALEZ/THE NEW YORK TIMES
(….) The image of the Mexican community for years was one of an illegal and politically apathetic group. But in recent years there have been signs that the younger generation is willing to speak out, starting with issues that most directly affect it, especially education. In 2002, immigrants successfully pushed for the City University system to preserve in-state tuition rates for students here illegally. Currently, they are seeking to keep alive the Dream Act, federal legislation that proposes to offer tuition help and a path to citizenship to immigrant high school graduates. (….) Joel Magallan (Consejero del IME 2006-2008) spent much of last year reminding local politicians that the children of the immigrants who come to him for help are all potential voters. Mr. Magallan is the executive director of Asociación Tepeyac de New York, an education and advocacy group he founded 10 years ago. When he started the group, his focus was on religious and cultural events that eased the isolation of recent immigrants. After the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, he scrambled to help the hundreds of laborers affected by the disaster. Now, without an immigration overhaul, he has redoubled his efforts among the young. “I had been thinking about this for a long time,” he said. “We were just waiting for the time when their children could be able to vote. And we have a lot of children.” He admitted there are challenges. Many young adults are focused on work, rather than community. And others come from homes where parents made them suspicious of politicians, thanks to the corruption that marked Mexican politics. Mr. Magallan focused his efforts on the children of his group’s earliest members, figuring they knew the issues and were willing to help. He hopes they will reach out to friends and encourage them to register to vote.

PAPEROS DE EU QUIEREN MIGRANTES / JULIANA FRAGOSO / NUEVO EXCELSIOR
La falta de una reforma migratoria para permitir el trabajo legal a millones de trabajadores indocumentados en Estados Unidos, tiene en riesgo a la industria de la papa de Washington, el segundo mayor productor de la verdura en fresco y el más importante en papa procesada. Así lo aseguró Frank Martínez, comisionado del Consejo Estatal de la Papa en Washington, quien dijo que de 20 mil fuentes de empleo que genera la industria en esa entidad, 90 por ciento de las plazas las ocupan mexicanos, muchos de ellos sin papeles.

AVANZA IDIOMA ESPAÑOL EN EU / EUNICE MOSCOSO / REFORMA
Con un número récord de latinos con derecho a voto para las elecciones de 2008, los candidatos ahora son bilingües. Cinco candidatos -Hillary Clinton, Bill Richardson, Barack Obama, Mitt Romney y John Edwards- tienen sitios web en español, algunos con enlaces a videos, biografías de candidatos, declaraciones y comunicados de prensa. Y es que el número de hispanos con derecho a voto ha pasado de 14 millones en 2000 a 17 millones en 2006, de acuerdo con el Pew Hispanic Center. Esa cifra será mayor en los comicios del próximo año.

Operator Is Sought To Check Legal Status at Labor Site Herndon officials are back to square one in their 10-month search for an operator who will bar illegal immigrants from using the town's day-laborer center, and at least one community leader is accusing Fairfax County of obstructing the town's efforts. Last week the town issued its third request for proposals from parties interested in running the Herndon Official Workers Center, which was thrust to center stage in the national debate over illegal immigration when it opened in December 2005. The center was also a key issue in last year's town elections, in which voters unseated the mayor and two council members who supported it. Their replacements, including Mayor Stephen J. DeBenedittis, promised changes in the way the center is run.

State Rep. Russell Pearce, known for his vocal stance to crack down on illegal immigrants, said he is considering running for Arizona's 6th Congressional District. Immigration officers pounded on Veronica Ruiz's apartment door in West Miami-Dade near dawn, their arrival marking the culmination of painstaking work to find a fugitive fleeing a final deportation order. Ruiz, from Colombia, hid with her husband and two children that February morning and never opened the door. The officers left, and Ruiz again went into hiding. Ruiz is among more than half a million immigration absconders in the United States. Her case illustrates the difficulty in expelling fugitives in a perennially underfunded and understaffed system.

Con una población de casi dos millones de latinos, los condados de Riverside y San Bernardino, no cuentan con un solo abogado certificado en el ramo de inmigración, así lo dieron a conocer activistas comunitarios de la región quienes afirmaron que la comunidad enfrenta una crisis en el área de representación legal. "Nos sentimos como si fuéramos un hospital atiborrado de enfermos graves que necesitan un especialista y sólo contamos con médicos generales. Muchos latinos de estas áreas necesitan una ayuda más profunda de la que un abogado regular o un paralegal pueda ofrecer", detalló Petra Alexander, titular de asuntos hispanos para la Diócesis de San Bernardino, una de las organizaciones de asesoría legal más grandes que sirve a estos condados.

COLORADO ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS WILL GET COLLEGE AID IN N.M./ DENVER POST
At least 10 illegal immigrants from Colorado will get to attend classes at the University of New Mexico this fall, with many not having to pay for tuition or books. A new Colorado law prohibits state colleges from providing in-state tuition to undocumented immigrants. In New Mexico, the state is barred from denying education benefits based on immigration status, said Terry Babbitt, director of admissions for the University of New Mexico.

ACTUALIDAD POLÍTICA: LA SEGREGACIÓN DE HOY/ PILAR MARRERO/ LA OPINIÓN
Sorprende hasta qué punto la historia se repite y cómo, a veces, parece que hemos aprendido poco. Dos recientes noticias, por ejemplo, revelan hasta qué punto algunos olvidan que aquí ya no se sanciona legalmente la segregación racial, aunque en la práctica hay condiciones económicas y sociales que aún la perpetuan. Y sin embargo, hay quienes están haciendo leyes que implican una nueva segregación, avalada y sancionada por muchos que no ven la similitud entre esto y lo que pasó antes en la historia de este país. Es más, se ofenden si uno lo señala. Es que han olvidado la historia. (…) Esta novedosa "solución" al problema de la inmigración ilegal, ni es novedosa ni es solución. A mí, que a menudo me doy cuenta que conozco más la historia de éste, mi país adoptivo, que muchos que nacieron aquí -porque me gusta leer y enterarme de las cosas, cualidad rara en estos tiempos- esto me suena a la época, hace apenas cuarenta o cincuenta años, en que había baños, asientos, piscinas y restaurantes para blancos, y otros para negros. ¿Cuál es la diferencia en el concepto? No mucha, pero estoy segura de que algún amable lector me la hará ver, indicando que los "ilegales" son esto y aquello y que no se merecen ni el aire que respiran. Y sin embargo, duele ver que un poquito más al sur esa segregación se renueva, en esa dolorida Nueva Orleans destruida por el huracán Katrina y la indolencia y abandono del gobierno federal, que dejó a muchos de sus ciudadanos a la deriva tras el desastre. Ahora que la población mexicana –latina en general- de Nueva Orleans ha ayudado en la reconstrucción del área, ya se convierte en grupo "non grato".

Along with help from nurses, the hospice care team includes a chaplain who goes to Madison's home to sing her favorite hymns and read sc riptures with her. ''So far so good,'' she said. In 2005, 82.2 percent of those receiving hospice care were white, while 7.5 percent identified the mselves as black or African-American, according to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. About 75 percent of the country is white, while about 12 percent is black, according to the Census Bureau. The California HealthCare Foundation issued a report in March that found some min orities and immigrants view hospice care as a way for doctors to deny them the medical care they've been fighting to get.(…)

INMIGRANTES CAPACITADOS SE ESTANCAN/ LA OPINIÓN
Aunque tienen papeles, no saben cómo promocionar sus habilidades En Perú, Inés González Lehman dirigía un equipo de mercadeo de 14 personas en una firma de alta tecnología. Después de casarse con un estadounide nse y emigrar legalmente al país de su marido, el único trabajo que consiguió fue el de hacer copias y atender llamadas telefónicas en el último peldaño de la escalera empresarial. El proyecto de ley de inmigración que acaba de ser derrotado en el Senado habría incrementado el número de v isas para trabajadores altamente capacitados. Pero hay decenas de miles de inmigrantes capacitados como González Lehman que están en el país y tie nen autorización para trabajar, pero están estancados en trabajos donde no pueden aplicar su experiencia y conocimientos.

Seasonal employees struggling for rights Andrea Galvez was surprised when Bonifacio Santos Morena returned to work this summer. Galvez, an employee of the Centre d'appui pour les travaille urs agricoles, a support group for migrant farm workers, was certain the agricultural worker from Mexico would have been excluded from the Seasona l Agricultural Workers Program. That's the federal program that brings thousands of people like Morena to Canada every year to fill the labour sho rtage on Canadian farms. Morena had caused a stir last year when he stood up to his employers at a farm near St. Remi. The agricultural worker and father of five from the state of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City, was one of the main organizers last summer when migrant farm workers tried to form a union.

In a letter to Immigration Minister Diane Finley, the lawyers' association criticized th e Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants, a regulatory body established by Ottawa in 2004, for failing to protect the public from unethical a nd unqualified practitioners. "The federal government gave the imprimatur of legitimacy to CSIC through recognition of its members as `authorized representatives,'" wrote Parke r MacCarthy, president of the 37,000-member lawyers' association.
