OPORTUNIDAD PARA COFEM/LA OPINIÓN
Los avatares por los cuales está pasando el Consejo de Federaciones Mexicanas en Norteamérica (COFEM) brinda una oportunidad única para revisar la misión de la organización, su estructura y funcionamiento. Las federaciones que agrupan a los nativos de los distintos estados de la república mexicana son una pieza importante para los emigrantes. En un primer momento, las agrupaciones cumplieron actividades sociales; posteriormente, comenzaron a trabajar activamente en el desarrollo económico de sus respectivos estados. La creación de COFEM significó un paso adelante para ampliar esta ayuda e influencia en la comunidad latina local. No cabe duda que tienen mucho para aportar, pero las rencillas internas son un obstáculo para ello. Desde hace tiempo hay quejas sobre el manejo de COFEM. Algunas serán ciertas, otras no. Lo indudable es que la administración del director ejecutivo, Arturo Carmona y su presidente, Francisco Moreno (Consejero del IME 2006-2008) carece de una transparencia deseable.

VOTARÁ EL SENADO HOY REFORMAS PARA DESPENALIZAR MIGRACIÓN INDOCUMENTADA / LA JORNADA
El Senado aprobará en su sesión de hoy reformas a la Ley General de Población tendientes a evitar “la criminalización” de los inmigrantes indocumentados. Así, se indica en la minuta, se armonizará la legislación nacional con los instrumentos internacionales que el país ha signado y ratificado y se modernizan las disposiciones jurídicas en la materia, promoviendo los derechos humanos. Con las reformas a esa ley se modifican los artículos 118 y 125 y se derogan siete ––19, 120, 121, 123, 124 y el 127–, que “penalizan con severidad los actos más frecuentemente efectuados en el contexto de la migración indocumentada, lo cual es inadmisible, por distanciarse de las exigencias sociales y el respeto a los derechos humanos”.

MIGRANTES TENDRÁN OFICINA DE DERECHOS HUMANOS, ANUNCIAN / EL UNIVERSAL
Las 50 quejas por maltratos que los indocumentados depositan cada semana ante la directiva del albergue La Casa del Migrante, serán canalizadas a una representación de los derechos humanos que se instalará en el lugar. “Ya fue aprobado el proyecto y para el próximo mes iniciaremos la instalación de una oficina de derechos humanos en la Casa del Migrante”, comentó el sacerdote Francisco Pellizari, director de esta posada. Dijo que aunque será una oficina pequeña, que ya fue construida en el lado norte del refugio, las quejas serán registradas en un sistema de cómputo, para canalizarlas a las autoridades.

TERMINA EN MEXICALI PERSECUCIÓN DE MIGRANTES; 2 MUERTOS / EL SOL DE MEXICO
Emperrada persecución iniciada en los Estados Unidos dejó trágico saldo de 2 migrantes muertos, 18 heridos, un agente de la Patrulla Fronteriza atropellado, tres de sus patrullas chocadas, una robada y tres polleros detenidos por agentes de la policía municipal de Mexicali, que pararon la loca fuga del principal sospechoso. El presunto responsable de todo este estropicio es Héctor Maldonado Ramírez, de 19 años, quien a bordo de una camioneta se volcó provocando la muerte de dos migrantes, y heridas a 15. Con él fueron detenidos el hermano Heriberto, de 23 años y su "patrón" José Leonídez Montes de Oca Salgado, de 47 años, quienes trataban de burlar el cerco policíaco.

LLAMAN FESTIVAL 'MEXICOACHELLA' / REFORMA
Café Tacvba puso a brincar a los estadounidenses durante la jornada sabatina del Coachella Music and Arts Festival y congregó a una significativa cantidad de mexicanos frente al escenario principal del encuentro al caer la tarde."Dicen que esto es el Mexicoachella", dijo Rubén Albarrán frente a la multitud con el marcado acento capitalino que ya caracteriza sus intervenciones en cada concierto. Era clara la presencia de audiencia mexicana reunida en torno a los tacvbos por los distintivos que fueron utilizados a propósito, entre ellos, los sombreros de Pique, las banderas con el sello del águila y la serpiente, y sobre todo, los coros multitudinarios que acompañaron temas como "Chilanga Banda" o "Ingrata". Albarrán pudo, entonces, dirigirse en español a su público como si la banda estuviera ofreciendo un concierto en México; cuando intentó establecer comunicación en inglés las cosas fueron algo más difíciles.

Fiel a sus raíces, Eva Longoria ha sido una de las principales promotoras del llamado nuevo diseño latino en Hollywood.Así, la ex Miss Corpus Christi, quien encarna precisamente a una modelo en la serie Esposas Desesperadas, es famosa por su pasión por los diseños sofisticados que destacan su atractivo, sobre todo si vienen de creadores latinos. En la entrega de los premios Alma 2007, Longoria sorprendió a la audiencia con más de 10 vestidos, todos creados especialmente por los mexicanos Louis Verdad y Eduardo Lucero, el dominicano Óscar de la Renta y los venezolano Ángel Sánchez y Carolina Herrera.

EL LAPD SE ALISTA PARA PROTESTAS DEL 1 DE MAYO/ JOEL RUBIN Y ANNA GORMAN/ VANESSA BAUZÁ /DIARIO HOY
En una cálida mañana a principios de este mes, unos 600 agentes del Departamento de Policía de Los Ángeles (LAPD) se congregaron en el estacionamiento vacío del Estadio de los Dodgers para un simulacro de gran relevancia. La mayoría se hizo pasar por manifestantes - haciendo el papel de los que se prevé llegarán este jueves al centro de Los Ángeles como parte de las protestas que se han planeado para 1 de Mayo en distintos lugares del país.

FALTA IMPULSO PARA LA MARCHA DE MAYO/ DIARIO HOY
Para Armando Peña el visitar las tiendas de dueños latinos en Waukegan con ánimo de recaudar contribuciones para la marcha pro inmigración de la semana que viene en Chicago ha sido un proceso lento. Salió de un restaurante mexicano con $20. Obtuvo otros $10 en una peluquería. La dulcería Azteca se puso con $620, pero las negativas son más comunes. “Lo que recibí son montones de no, no y no”, dijo. Las masivas marchas pro inmigrantes de 2006, incluyendo el mitin del 1 de mayo, que congregó a 400,000 personas en el Parque Grant, ayudó a elevar la reforma migratoria al tope de la agenda nacional y dio un nuevo enfoque a la comunidad inmigrante del área de Chicago.

In a recent commentary, I wrote that, as a Mexican-American, the ugliness of the immigration debate offends me -- not as a Mexican, but as an American.A woman wrote in and asked me to be more specific: Just what was it about the immigration debate that was so ugly?She came to the right place. MEXICANOS EN HAWAII QUIEREN SU CONSULADO/ ARACELI MARTÍNEZ ORTEGA / LA OPINIÓN
No les alcanzan los servicios del consulado en San Francisco, dicen. El rápido crecimiento de la población mexicana en Hawaii, estimada en al menos 40 mil personas, ha convertido en una urgencia la necesidad de contar con un consulado en el estado número 50 de la nación, dijeron residentes. Los mexicanos radicados en Hawaii están ávidos de pasaportes, matriculas consulares y asistencia legal en posibles casos de redadas y detenciones. Debido a que constantemente tienen que viajar entre las islas que conforman el archipiélago de Hawaii, y al incremento de las medidas de seguridad, se ha hecho indispensable para los mexicanos contar con un pasaporte al abordar un avión de una isla a otra. El cónsul de México en San Francisco, Carlos Félix Corona dijo que se están dando los pasos para contar en un futuro con una oficina consular en Hawaii, pero "tenemos que hacerlo de una manera inteligente y con cuidado, porque las necesidades de los 12 millones de mexicanos que viven en Estados Unidos son muchas".

MEXICANOS SE UNEN PARA AYUDAR A ECUATORIANOS / PAULA DÍAZ/ DIARIO HOY
El Consulado General de Ecuador, la Cámara de Comercio de Lynwood y Casa Puebla se han unido para ayudar a los damnificados de las inundaciones en el país suramericano, solicitando víveres, medicina y dinero. “La fuerte etapa invernal ocasionó perdidas de trescientos mil millones de dólares en Ecuador, hubo daños en la infraestructura y en el sector agrícola. Las inundaciones dejaron quinientas mil familias damnificadas y cincuenta personas muertas”, dijo Eddie Bedon, Cónsul General del Ecuador. Jesús Salas, presidente de Casa Puebla, dijo que se unió a esta campaña porque “la hermandad prevalece en momentos difíciles". Casa Puebla fue una de las instituciones que más apoyo brindó, junto con Casa Durango, cuando ocurrieron las inundaciones de Tabasco, México. “Ayudar al hermano que lo necesite, es el compromiso de los mexicanos y de la comunidad poblana”, indicó Salas. María García, presidente de la Cámara de Comercio de Lynwood, señaló que se hizo una convocatoria a empresas, organizaciones comunitarias y a la comunidad en general para que respondan al llamado.

DARÁN ID A INDOCUMENTADOS/ LA OPINIÓN
Avanza San Francisco en otorgar la identificación. El alcalde de San Francisco, Gavin Newson, anunció mediante anuncios en medios electrónicos y espectaculares que en agosto próximo dará inicio al proceso de inscripción de indocumentados para la expedición de identificaciones. Al dar a conocer el anuncio para otorgar identificaciones municipales en noviembre, el funcionario dijo que deseaba recordar a los indocumentados que la ciudad los estima como seres humanos. "Estamos de pie para decir a nuestros residentes que a nosotros no nos interesa su situación migratoria; nos interesan ustedes, como seres humanos, como residentes de nuestra ciudad que queremos que participen en la vida de San Francisco", dijo el alcalde Newsom.

HARRIS COUNTY'S LATINO VOTE GROWS ALONG WITH POPULATION / ALAN BERNSTEIN / HOUSTON CHRONICLE
In a generation, Hispanics on the rolls have tripledEditor's note: First in an occasional series this year on the emerging Latino vote.In 1990, the political profile of Hispanics in Harris County was nearly as slim as a Day of the Dead skeleton figure. Latino registered voters numbered about 100,000. Hispanic membership on the Houston City Council was stuck at one. The state Senate and U.S. House contained no Hispanics from here.As the babies born then turn old enough to vote in this year's November election, politics in the Houston area has a much deeper Hispanic tinge. Hispanics on the voter rolls have nearly tripled in the passing of a generation; the number of Hispanic lawmakers from here is inching upward. The Democratic Party, if it captures county judgeships and government positions for the first time in 14 years, will owe much to a stimulated Hispanic vote and Hispanic candidates, such as Houston councilman Adrian Garcia, who is running for sheriff.

FRANCE MAKES U.S. IMMIGRATION DEBATE LOOK NICE / RUBEN NAVARRETTE / SACRAMENTO BEE
The United States does a better job with immigration than any other country in the world. That's right, even with its broken border, mixed messages, recurring xenophobia and all the shouting on talk shows, other nations – particularly in Europe – are far worse in their treatment of immigrants. Some, including Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Carlsbad, would have us follow the lead of countries such as Germany and make it more difficult for children of the foreign-born to obtain citizenship. It's a dreadful idea. It creates a population alienated from the mainstream and, by depriving them of citizenship rights, makes it easier for them to be preyed upon.

THE PRICE OF HYPOCRISY/THE WASHINGTON POST
Prince William County's politicians choke on the cost of bashing illegal immigrants. PRINCE WILLIAM County Board Chairman Corey A. Stewart, the top elected official in Virginia's second-largest county, huffed and puffed his way to electoral victory last year as the champion of tough measures against illegal immigrants. Now that he's safe and secure in office, Mr. Stewart, a Republican, has decided the policy he advocated so strenuously is well and good -- as long as the county doesn't have to pay for it. Faced with a tight budget and rising property taxes, the county board, acting at Mr. Stewart's behest, slashed $3.1 million in enforcement funding for the crackdown on illegal immigrants. That was nearly half the $6.9 million budgeted to implement the measures in the first year alone. Bashing illegal immigrants on the campaign trail, and then refusing to pay up at budget season, struck even some board members who supported the crackdown as duplicitous.

N.VA. HIT WITH COST OF SCHOOL MIGRATION/ AMY GARDNER/ WASHINGTON POST
Pr. William Policies Drive Immigrants To Inner Suburbs. Hundreds of foreign-born families have pulled their children from Prince William County public schools and enrolled them in nearby Fairfax County, Arlington County and Alexandria since the start of the school year, imposing a new financial burden on those inner suburbs in a time of lean budgets. The school-to-school migration within Northern Virginia started just as Prince William began implementing rules to deny some services to illegal immigrants and require police to check the immigration status of crime suspects thought to be in the country illegally. Opponents of the rules say they have had a chilling effect on Prince William's once-thriving Latino community, prompting even legal immigrants to flee a hostile environment. Supporters say the rules have done what they were supposed to by primarily pushing illegal immigrants out.

FENCE FOLLY/ THE SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE
Scrapping virtual border wall was right call. Americans wonder why the U.S.-Mexico border is so porous and why the U.S. government has such a tough time keeping out illegal drugs and undocumented immigrants. Part of the reason is that lawmakers and government officials are always pursuing the wrong priorities and coming up with harebrained schemes that, while politically popular, never work. Meanwhile, they take one look at the unpopular ideas that just might work – punishing employers, requiring workers to carry tamperproof identification cards – and avoid them. One of the more recent harebrained schemes is the idea of creating a so-called virtual fence on the border – starting with the section that separates Mexico and Arizona. Last week, the government announced it was scrapping the $20 million prototype – which consisted of nine electronic surveillance towers along a 28-mile section of border southwest of Tucson – because the system failed to adequately alert Border Patrol agents to illegal crossings. Oh, is that all? Say, isn't that sort of thing rather essential?

ITS FUTURE UNCERTAIN, BARRIER ON THE BORDER GOING UP QUICKLY/ EILEEN SULLIVAN/ THE WASHINGTON POST
The U.S. fence along the Mexican border is less a wall than a stuttering set of blockades: half barrier, half gaps. Americans are split pretty much the same way: half in favor, half against, passionate on both sides when it comes to the idea of erecting a wall to keep people from entering the country illegally. It can seem a shaky foundation as the United States rushes to complete the fencing on nearly 700 miles of the border by the end of the year. That's when a new administration arrives in the White House with its own ideas about security, freedom, the 11 million illegal immigrants already here and the prospect of many more on the way.

TERROR EN EL BARRIO LATINO/ AGUSTÍN DURÁN/ LA OPINIÓN
Humberto Caspa analiza la situación en Costa Mesa; podría ser cualquier lugar donde viven latinos en Estados Unidos. En Costa Mesa, a los inmigrantes se les prohíbe jugar al futbol en el parque. Si son arrestados por la policía por cualquier motivo, un agente de inmigración los espera para deportarlos en caso de no tener documentos. Si son jornaleros, no puede ofrecer su trabajo. Humberto Caspa, activista, comentarista y profesor de sociología, brinda y analiza estos testimonios y otros en su libro Terror en el barrio latino: El ascenso de la nueva derecha en el gobierno local. La realidad que allí se pinta, recalca, podría constituirse en el futuro de la comunidad latina en otras ciudades de Estados Unidos. Caspa toma como escenario una ciudad donde desde hace cinco años la comunidad inmigrante protagoniza una batalla campal contra los grupos antiinmigrantes.

SAMARITANOS DEJAN AGUA PARA INDOCUMENTADOS QUE CRUZAN LA FRONTERA / JONATHON SHACAT / RUMBO
Raymundo Pineda apoyó su mano en un barril de plástico de 55 galones (208 litros). La parte de arriba estaba caliente por el sol. Pero al llegar al fondo se sentía más frío. El barril parecía estar a medio llenar. Calculó que tenía unos 20 galones. Antonio Mejía sacó una manguera de una camioneta F-150 y colocó uno de sus extremos en una abertura del barril. La gravedad hizo el resto, y el barril se llenó con agua de un tanque que había en el vehículo. Ese día, un pequeño grupo de gente llenó de agua siete barriles cerca de Naco, estado mexicano de Sonora. El agua es para los indocumentados que cruzan el desierto a pie, ingresando ilegalmente a los Estados Unidos.

AUMENTAN FATALIDADES ENTRE TRABAJADORES HISPANOS EN EEUU / RUMBO
El número de trabajadores inmigrantes y latinos que han muerto en sus sitios de trabajo ha aumentado marcadamente en los últimos años, revela un estudio divulgado el lunes. En el 2006, las lesiones fatales entre los trabajadores latinos se incrementó un 7% respecto al 2005, con 990 fatalidades entre este grupo de trabajadores, el más alto nivel reportado hasta fecha, indica el estudio "Muertes en el Trabajo: Las pérdidas por negligencias", de la central sindical estadounidense AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations). El estudio, difundido en el Día Internacional en Memoria de los Trabajadores Fallecidos o Lesionados, determina que en el 2006 el número total de lesiones fatales en los puestos de trabajo en Estados Unidos fue 5.840, un incremento respecto al año anterior.

HISPANIC GROCERY STORE TRIES FOR LARGER APPEAL/ THE WASHINGTON POST
Carlos Castro walked through his newly opened Todos Supermarket in Dumfries last week wearing slacks, a sport jacket and a crisply pressed tie. As Castro listened to reports from workers installing new security cameras, ordering products and placing myriad finishing touches on the 15,000-square-foot grocery store, he switched seamlessly from Spanish to English, depending on whom he was addressing. Walking around the store, he greeted each new client with either a "hello" or an " hola." "Can I help you with anything?" Castro asked shopper Tina Hopper, 50, a resident of Graham Park Shores. "No I am just cruising around," she said. "I am so glad you opened this, it is so convenient. Congratulations." This is exactly the kind of reception Castro was hoping for. Castro's Todos Supermarkets have long served the Hispanic communities of Alexandria and Woodbridge, but with his new store in Dumfries, Castro is trying to expand his base.

HISPANIC ACTIVISTS WANT GOVERNOR TO VETO 'DIVISIVE' BILL / HOWARD FISCHER / ARIZONA DAILY STAR
Hispanic activists are urging Gov. Janet Napolitano to veto legislation mandating that local police and sheriff's departments deal with violations of federal immigration laws. (…)They also called it "a divisive bill" that polarizes the state between "the pro-immigrant reformers and the anti-immigrant groups infiltrated by hate organizations like the neo-Nazis and KKK." Napolitano has through the end of the day today to decide whether to sign or veto it. But Rep. Tom Prezelski, D-Tucson, said the governor should sign it. He said the legislation is nowhere near as onerous as foes believe. And he said it is far preferable to a ballot measure being pushed by Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, to give police officers an active role in catching illegal immigrants.

VISITING BORDER SHOWS HUMAN FACE OF MIGRANTS / RABBI STEVE GUTOW / THE ARIZONA DAILY STAR
The immigration debate has been raging for quite some time and Congress still lacks consensus on meaningful, comprehensive immigration reform. The system  is broken, and there are no quick fixes. The Jewish Council for Public Affairs has worked extensively on the immigration issue, but I realized that working from New York, there is much I don't understand. So last month I took a trip to the Arizona border with the Jewish Community Relations chair from Tucson and two members of a group called the Samaritans. The mission of the Samaritans is to bring food, water and medical assistance to the hundreds of immigrants who cross the border illegally and are often left to die in the hot desert. I learned that there is literally a civilization of people responsible for preventing Mexicans from crossing the border. The increase in personnel and infrastructure has been significant, and the truth is it will be hard to diminish the program of "prevention and capture" because it employs so many people and has become so large.(…) The 12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States are not going away, and countless others will die trying to join them. Illegal immigration affects us all, so we all benefit from a real solution.

DYSFUNCTION AT A CHARITY THAT RELIES ON COUNCIL LARGESS / RUSS BUETTNER AND SERGE F. KOVALESKI / THE NEW YORK TIMES
Hiram Monserrate, a city councilman from Queens, has supplied more than $400,000 in city funds in recent years to a nonprofit agency that has been run by some of his closest aides and whose financial records have devolved into what its current director calls “a mess.” The organization, Libre, which offers a wide array of programs and services for the Latino community, has not filed a tax return for the past two years. It has never registered as a charity with the state attorney general’s office, as required. And its director says unpaid bills and poor record-keeping grew so problematic that he had to all but shutter Libre last year. (….) Libre has told city officials that it provides recreation and education programs, assistance to immigrants and job training for people in Queens. A more detailed picture of the organization’s activities was unavailable because Mr. Herrera said he was not directly involved in program services and other staff members did not return calls. (….)

IN EFFORT TO CREATE BETTER JOBS, MEXICO TACKLES SCHOOL SYSTEM/ARIZONA REPUBLIC
In an elementary school emptied of kids for the weekend, a dozen Mexican math teachers sat at tables and puzzled over a problem with no easy answers. The immediate task: finding a creative way to teach square roots. But the bigger challenge - improving Mexican students' dismal performance - loomed large in the classroom.(…) Along the U.S.-Mexican border, the shortcomings of Mexico's schools prompt many Mexican families to enroll their children in U.S. schools. They are also a major reason Mexican migrants bring their children to the United States, even though statistics show those children struggle once they arrive. Nearly 23 percent of all Mexican-born teenagers drop out of U.S. high schools, the highest of any nationality, according to a 2005 study by the Pew Hispanic Center.

EXPECT LONG WAITS IN NATURALIZATION PROCESS / ALLAN WERNICK / ORLANDO SENTINEL
The U.S. Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services now estimates naturalization-application processing times at 14-16 months. That's a slight reduction from previous estimates of 16-18 months. Applicants who filed before the fees went up on July 30, 2007, should be naturalized in time to vote in the November elections. That's assuming that outgoing USCIS Director Emilio T. Gonzalez is correct in his estimate. We should applaud any improvement in USCIS processing times. But a two-month improvement still leaves naturalization applicants waiting more than a year to become U.S. citizens. Prior to the fee increase, some USCIS offices had reduced the process to about 90 days. The USCIS said it needed the higher fees to finance application processing. The agency got its money. It apparently hasn't figured out how to spend it on improving services.

LATINOS EN SANTA MÓNICA/ AGUSTÍN DURÁN/ LA OPINIÓN
Las altas temperaturas llevan a miles de personas a las playas. Con sandalias, pantalones cortos y blusas ligeras, además de una hielera llena de jugos y agua para que los mantuvieran frescos durante el día en la playa, la familia San Juan se dirigió ayer a Santa Mónica, donde sus miembros trataron de contrarrestar la ola de calor que vivió Los Ángeles el pasado fin de semana. (….) La mayoría hispana comenzó desde el estacionamiento, donde no faltó la camioneta con música de Chalino Sánchez y media docena de jóvenes buscando estacionamiento. Algunos todavía traían sus botas del baile de una noche anterior y sus lentes oscuros, con los que se protegían del sol, y escondían mejor el cansancio. Lo mismo sucedió en la playa donde los bañistas, algunos en pantalones de mezclilla cortos y sin quitarse la playera, disfrutaban del vaivén del agua.Sólo en la mayoría de los restaurantes ubicados en el muelle, aquellos que parece que cobran hasta por sentarse, los latinos parecieron ser minoría, pero en el McDonald’s desde los empleados hasta los comensales, el latino fue predominante. FIESTA BROADWAY: WHEN 150,000 PEOPLE IS NOT ENOUGH/ JESUS SANCHEZ/LOS ANGELES TIMES
Sunday's Fiesta Broadway, billed as the nation's largest Latino festival, drew an estimated 150,000 people to downtown Los Angeles to get a jump on Cinco de Mayo celebrations. That's a huge number, based on LAPD estimates, but far below the 500,000 that organizers had been projecting and below previous years, according to L.A. Opinion (story in Spanish). DALLAS CELEBRA 'GUANAJUATO POR UN DÍA' / PATRICIA ESTRADA / AL DÍA
Líderes de Casa Guanajuato y funcionarios de ese estado mexicano participaron en la feria de servicios "Guanajuato por un día" este domingo en Dallas. En dicho evento, expidieron documentos, informaron sobre programas comunitarios y convivieron con sus paisanos. Uno de los servicios de mayor demanda fue la expedición de actas de nacimiento mexicanas. "En algún lado soy alguien", manifestó Verónica del Pilar Barrazo Delgado cuando un oficial del registro civil del estado de Guanajuato le entregó su certificado de nacimiento en el poblado de San Felipe.

MEXICAN PRIDE ROCKS THE ARAGON BALLROOM—FOR 7 HOURS / BENJAMIN ORTIZ / CHICAGO TRIBUNE
Just past midnight at an Aragon Ballroom breaking out in wall-to-wall slam pits, the supershow "Mexicanos al Grito de Rock" had nearly the entire chock-a-block crowd singing the Mexican National Anthem, complete with patriotic gritos (cries) of "¡Que viva México!" to shake the stage like majestic cannonade.It was not only a pre-Cinco de Mayo celebration but also practice for the upcoming May Day march, flash points for Mexican nationalism and hard-core righteous fury about the treatment of Hispanic immigrants in the U.S., themes not lost on any of the six bands (mostly from Mexico City) that played from roughly from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. for an audience seriously rocking the red, white and green. Frocked in nationalistic T-shirts, lucha libre wrestling masks, home-team soccer jerseys and even the Mexican flag itself draped like a cape, the mainly twentysomething rockeros sported all the cultural commonplaces of the motherland, reinterpreted in Chicago as pride in home, hearth and long hair.

SE ALZA MÁS LA ESTRELLA DEL CANTANTE MEXICANO ABATIDO/ ÓSCAR ÁVILA / DIARIO HOY
Sergio Gómez vivió la vida clásica de un triunfador en el mundo del entretenimiento, la del chamaco que deja su pueblo, se muda a una gran urbe y se convierte en estrella. Pero el solista de la amada banda K-Paz de la Sierra, con sede en Chicago, también sufrió la coda trágica del astro que muere joven. Hace cinco meses, a Gómez lo torturaron y asesinaron después de un concierto en Morelia, que es un hervidero de violencia relacionada con la droga. Eso pudo haber puesto fin a la historia de Sergio Gómez. En vez de hacer eso, el crimen de Gómez lo elevó a nivel de icono de Chicago ante los ojos de su pueblo natal en las colinas del estado de Michoacán. Al igual que otras celebridades predestinadas a sucumbir, en torno a Gómez se ha formado una mitología a raíz de su muerte.

CONCRETA EL GOBERNADOR APOYOS A MIGRANTES EN EU / CORREO DE GUANAJUATO
El mandatario estatal explicó que las acciones que se realizan a favor de los migrantes y sus familias tratan de aportar un elemento "que nos diga que somos y seguimos siendo la misma nación, la nación mexicana, el pueblo de Guanajuato, aquí en Texas y allá en la patria chica Guanajuato". Aseveró que para que la tradición perdure se están tratando de llenar expectativas, pues el reto de México es la educación. Por ese motivo, manifestó, se pone en funcionamiento la Universidad Virtual de Guanajuato, en donde se aprovechan las tecnologías modernas para llevar a universidad y la preparatoria al norte y al sur del estado, pero también un sueño, traer la preparación a la comunidad migrante.

PREPARAN MARCHA POR UN TRATO DIGNO / LA VOZ DE MICHOACÀN
Activistas preparan para el 1 de Mayo en Washington una serie de movilizaciones y cabildeo en el Congreso por un trato más digno a favor de unos 12 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados en Estados Unidos. Las marchas coinciden con la celebración internacional del Día del Trabajo, que se origina en la lucha del 1 de mayo de 1886 por un grupo de trabajadores de Chicago; muchos de ellos inmigrantes, por la jornada laboral de ocho horas, que no se conmemora en Estados Unidos. “Es cierto que el 1 Mayo se celebra el Día del Trabajo a nivel mundial, menos en Estados Unidos, pero nosotros lo hemos convertido en el Día del Inmigrante”, destacó el vocero de la Coalición 1 de Mayo 2008, el mexicano Norberto Martínez, uno de los organizadores de las movilizaciones en los Estados Unidos.
