GRUPOS ANTIINMIGRANTES AMENAZAN DE MUERTE A LÍDERES SINDICALES QUE AYUDAN A INDOCUMENTADOS / GARDENIA MENDOZA AGUILAR / LA OPINIÓN
Encarcelamientos, amenazas de muerte, llamadas telefónicas, correos electrónicos, redadas en las empresas que representan… los activistas de sindicatos latinos que trabajan a favor de este grupo de trabajadores en Estados Unidos son acosados con mayor frecuencia por grupos antiinmigrantes en aquel país. La creciente afiliación de empleados hispanos a las redes sindicales y la falta de una política migratoria federal que ha llevado a los gobiernos estatales y municipales a implementar sus propias políticas en contra de la inmigración indocumentada son algunas de las principales causas.Así lo denunciaron representantes de trabajadores pertenecientes también al Instituto de Mexicanos en el Exterior (IME), quienes recurrieron esta semana a la Cancillería mexicana para solicitar que a través de los consulados se informe a los mexicanos residentes en la Unión Americana sobre esta protección laboral.

ABANDONAN INDOCUMENTADOS IGLESIA TEXANA / EL FINANCIERO
Cientos de indocumentados que en los últimos días permanecieron refugiados en una iglesia católica de la comunidad de Postville, Iowa, comenzaron a abandonar el templo este fin de semana tras recibir apoyo de autoridades religiosas. Entre 250 y 300 inmigrantes se refugiaron en la Iglesia Católica Santa Brígida, de Postville, desde el pasado lunes, cuando agentes migratorios realizaron una redada a la planta procesadora de carne Agriprocessors, y detuvieron allí a 390 trabajadores indocumentados. El arzobispo Jerome Hanus de la Arquidiócesis de Dubuque, Iowa, encabezó la noche del sábado un servicio religioso en la Iglesia, en el que ofreció palabras de confort y esperanza a los inmigrantes.

DETIENEN A MEXICANOS TRAS RETENER A INDOCUMENTADOS EN EU / MILENIO
Tres mexicanos fueron detenidos por retener a decenas de indocumentados en una sucia casa de seguridad en Los Angeles, donde una mujer fue violada y otras dijeron que fueron amenazadas con ataques sexuales, dijeron autoridades. José Teul, de 23 años, Daniel Peña, de 18, y Saúl Méndez, de 35, fueron acusados de albergar a inmigrantes indocumentados en la casa, de dos pisos, indicó el viernes la vocera Virginia Kice del Servicio de Inmigración y Aduanas de Estados Unidos. Los tres sospechosos fueron arrestados junto con 57 indocumentados, incluidos adolescentes y niños de meses, que procedían del centro y sur de América. Las detenciones fueron efectuadas el miércoles durante un allanamiento, dijo Kice. De inmediato no se supo dónde estaban detenidos los tres ni si tenían abogados.

Posturas y compromisos de 150 universitarios latinoamericanos sobre seguridad, educación, política, migración, sustentabilidad, economía, salud, arte y cultura recoge el Acta Vanguardia Latina 2008, firmada al término del congreso Espacio USA 2008. En esta reunión, lleva a cabo en la ciudad de Washington con el tema "América, un Continente en Movimiento", participaron jóvenes latinos radicados en EU y otros provenientes de otros países, como Brasil, México y Colombia, informó Gastón Melo, presidente de Espacio de Vinculación AC.

Cuando, ante la dificultad de clasificarnos, la Oficina del Censo insertó una nota, al hablar de los latinos, diciendo que "pueden ser de cualquier raza", acepto, sin decirlo abiertamente, que no sabe qué somos y que lo que nos distingue es un apellido, un idioma, ciertas costumbres, una posición social humanista, una tristeza con música o un país de origen que alguna vez fue parte del imperio español, sólo que, dentro de ese universo, hay muchos que son morenos, de obscuro a claro, y otros blancos y güeros y… hay de todos los colores y sabores y todos somos latinos.

TEXAS ATTORNEY GENERAL GREG ABBOTT FAVORS REQUIRING VOTERS TO PRODUCE PHOTO IDS / DALLAS MORNING NEWS
In a brief to the U.S. Supreme Court supporting tougher voter-identification laws, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott cited the potential for fraud as a reason to require photo IDs. He wrote that "serious allegations of voter fraud have persisted, especially in South Texas, for more than a century" and said he has "obtained numerous indictments, guilty pleas and convictions." Attorneys general in several other states signed on. Last month, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that states can require photo identification without violating voters'
constitutional rights.

TOP OFFICIALS HINGE CAREERS ON IMMIGRATION / THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC
Gov. Janet Napolitano came closer than ever last week to a full-blown conflict with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio over their differing approaches to illegal immigration. The governor ordered $1.6 million in state money to be redirected from Arpaio's operations to a state-led task force charged with arresting many of the state's 60,000 fugitives. Arpaio and other Republican leaders reacted with outrage. Napolitano responded by saying her move wasn't aimed at the sheriff, but at protecting the public from dangerous felons. In recent weeks, Napolitano, Arpaio, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and other top state and local officials have offered starkly different views on how to deal with immigration in the Valley. AGREEMENT REACHES IN IMMIGRATION RAID LAWSUIT / CHICAGO TRIBUNE
Lawyers for immigrant workers arrested in a raid at a meat packing plant in Postville say they've reached an agreement with federal authorities that will keep the workers in Iowa, The Des Moines Register reported Saturday. The agreement will allow 83 detained workers who were not criminally charged to remain in the state at least until their administrative bond hearings are held, the lawyers said. That could take six months or more, the attorneys said. The deal was reached late Friday. Lawyers said they want to keep the workers from being shipped to other states and given new attorneys. The lawyers said that would deprive them of their rights to a vigorous defense.

RESORT WORKERS ARRESTED IN RAID AWAIT HEARINGS / BILL BRUBAKER / THE WASHINGTON POST
38 of 53 Ex-Lansdowne Employees Facing Immigration Charges Are Out of Custody Until They Face a Judge. Six weeks after immigration agents raided Lansdowne Resort in Loudoun County, most of the 59 workers arrested on civil charges of entering the United States illegally have been released from custody while they await hearings on their immigration status, authorities said. Six of the former workers have been deported or left the country voluntarily, resolving their cases, and one has been charged with a criminal offense, officials said. Jose Manuel Guerra, 47, a native of El Salvador, has been charged with using bogus Social Security and alien registration numbers to get a job at Lansdowne, according to court documents. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. Guerra admitted to a federal agent that he bought a fake U.S. immigration resident alien card from an unknown person on an unknown street in the District for $50, court documents say.

MISSOURI OKS TOUGH IMMIGRANT MEASURE / CHICAGO TRIBUNE
Missouri lawmakers gave final approval Friday to a bill that adds restrictions and requirements for illegal immigrants, the cities in which they live and the businesses that employ them. The measure, awaiting the signature of Gov. Matt Blunt, would require people to prove they are U.S. citizens or are legally in the country when applying for food stamps, housing and other public benefits.

DANBURY CHURCH JOINS MOVEMENT TO HELP ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS / DENVER POST
A Danbury congregation is joining a national movement to offer shelter and help to families whose members could be separated or deported over their immigration status. However, officials of the Danbury Unitarian Universalist Congregation say they do not yet know whether they will emulate some other churches that let the immigrants live in church-owned properties to shield them from federal agents. Carl Tichler, the Danbury congregation's president, said its members voted 67-7 to become the first in Connecticut to join the nationwide New Sanctuary Movement. Members will decide over the next several months what actions they will take, he said.

But Mexicans lag behind others assimilating in U.S.A wide-ranging and provocative new study of immigrants' integration into U.S. society has concluded that newcomers today are assimilating more quickly than their predecessors did 100 years ago — with Cubans, Vietnamese and Filipinos among those leading the way. The study, conducted by a Duke University economist and published last week by the Manhattan Institute, a free-market-oriented conservative think tank in New York City, seeks to break new ground on one of the most contentious topics in the debate over immigration — the question of how the immigrant stream of the past 25 years is jelling with its sometimes wary host.

IMMIGRANTS’ CHILDREN FIND BETTER LIVES, STUDY SHOWS / THE NEW YORK TIMES
A decade-long study of adult children of immigrants to the New York region has concluded that they are rapidly entering the mainstream and doing better than their parents in terms of education and earnings — even outperforming native-born Americans in many cases. But the study also warned of problems that could block upward mobility for members of the “second generation,” including persistent poverty and poor school performance among Dominicans and racial discrimination against black immigrants from the Caribbean.

En 1974, 203 Mexicains avaient quitté leur pays pour le Canada en vertu du Programme fédéral des travailleurs agricoles saisonniers. Aujourd’hui, ils sont plus de 12?000 à s’exiler avec l’espoir de gagner assez d’argent pour améliorer leur sort. Cette migration massive n’est toutefois pas sans conséquence pour les communautés mexicaines abandonnées par plusieurs de leurs habitants. L’été, le petit village de Cuijingo se retrouve sans hommes. Dans les rues, à l’église ou encore au marché, il n’y a que des femmes et des enfants. Pour gagner leur croûte, la majorité des hommes quittent leur famille et s’envolent vers ce qu’ils considèrent comme la terre promise: le Canada. «Il y a de l’argent à faire là-bas, un point c’est tout, lance José Isabel Rivera, un travailleur saisonnier. C’est pour ça que nous y allons», poursuit-il en préparant les feuilles de maïs qui serviront à faire cuire les tamales, une spécialité de la cuisine mexicaine.

DEMANDAN ALCALDES TEXANOS A CHERTOFF / REFORMA
Alcaldes y líderes empresariales de Texas interpusieron ayer una demanda colectiva en la que sostienen que el Secretario de Seguridad Interna, Michael Chertoff, engañó a propietarios de tierras para que cedieran sus derechos de propiedad a fin de construir un muro a lo largo de la frontera con México. Miembros de la Coalición Fronteriza de Texas dijeron que Chertoff no negoció una compensación justa con los propietarios a cambio de que éstos permitieran el acceso a sus tierras para seleccionar los sitios donde se construirá la cerca fronteriza.

DETIENEN A INDOCUMENTADOS QUE CONSTRUÍAN CÁRCEL EN EU / EL FINANCIERO
Un grupo de 25 indocumentados de México, Brasil, Guatemala y Perú que trabajaba en la construcción de una cárcel en el suroeste de Florida, fue arrestado por autoridades migratorias. Los detenidos son 22 hombres y tres mujeres y, de acuerdo con voceros policiales, 24 de ellos fueron empleados por subcontratistas de la obra. El grupo construía la nueva prisión del condado de Lee cuando fue arrestado el jueves en una operación conjunta de la Oficina de Inmigración y Aduanas de Estados Unidos y el Departamento de Policía del Condado Lee.

MIGRANTES EN EU DENUNCIAN QUE LOS INTOXICAN CON DROGA AL SER DEPORTADOS / MARIANA VIAYRA RAMÍREZ / LA CRÓNICA
Doce organizaciones defensoras de inmigrantes en Estados Unidos, encabezadas por la Alianza Nacional de Comunidades Latinoamericanas y Caribeñas (NALAAC, por sus siglas en inglés), con sede en Los Ángeles, denunciaron que en los centros de detención se ha comenzado a inyectar drogas a inmigrantes para “tranquilizarlos”. Jorge Mario Cabrera Valladares, vocero de NALAAC, aseguró que también existen testimonios que señalan la muerte de inmigrantes intoxicados en dichos centros de detención.

Desde hace tiempo diversas organizaciones defensoras de los derechos de los inmigrantes en Estados Unidos, denunciaron que las autoridades migratorias inyectan medicamentos sicotrópicos a los extranjeros detenidos, con el fin de mantenerlos sedados durante los vuelos de deportación. Ahora lo publica The Washington Post y la noticia ha causado revuelo. Drogar por la fuerza a los trabajadores indocumentados para mantenerlos quietos durante su detención y deportación, es una táctica vigente desde 2003, año en que se creó la Agencia de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés), una de las 23 dependencias que integran el departamento de Seguridad Nacional.

AMENAZAN A SACERDOTE EN EU POR PROTESTA CONTRA LOS MINUTEMAN / MILENIO
El sacerdote José Landaverde, quien encabeza una protesta en contra de la visita a Chicago del fundador de los Minuteman, Chris Simcox, indicó que ha recibido llamadas telefónicas intimidatorias en los últimos cuatro días. Landaverde dirigirá este domingo y mañana lunes una vigilia frente a la Universidad De Paul, donde Simcox dará una conferencia invitado por un grupo de alumnos conservadores. El religioso, de la parroquia Misión Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, ubicada en el vecindario mexicano La Villita, dio a conocer las amenazas recibidas, pero descartó levantar una demanda legal.

MÉXICO SA / CARLOS FERNÁNDEZ-VEGA / LA JORNADA
Una de las patas que sostienen la endeble mesa económica del país comienza a mostrar signos de debilitamiento, aunque éstos se atribuyan a la nueva ola recesiva en Estados Unidos. Así, por segundo año consecutivo, el monto de remesas que la paisanada envía a sus familias en México podría reportar merma, en comparación con el boom registrado en los primeros años del nuevo siglo, cuando se multiplicó por cuatro. Ya en 2007 el reporte oficial dio cuenta de un descenso cercano al uno por ciento, comparado con el de 2006, en el monto de remesas de la mexicanada que labora en el vecino del norte. Para el primer trimestre de 2008 tal baja representó alrededor de 3 por ciento, contra igual periodo de un año atrás, alcanzándose el menor monto para un lapso similar desde 2005, de acuerdo con el Banco de México.

Al aprobar la medida en abril, las autoridades no pensaron que podrían estar dando inicio a una gran batalla. José Ochoa estaciona su furgoneta en el mismo sector de una carretera desde hace dos décadas y, como muchos otros vendedores de tacos de Los Ángeles, se negó a cambiar de sitio al entrar en vigor una disposición que los obliga a moverse cada hora para no recibir multas de mil dólares. Ochoa dijo que decidió correr el riesgo porque no puede abandonar a sus clientes y porque la nueva disposición representa una ventaja injusta para los restaurantes tradicionales, al tiempo que discrimina contra los vehículos como el suyo, que funcionan en la zona de East Los Ángeles desde hace décadas.

El 14 de mayo se publicó en el Diario Oficial de la Federación un documento de nombre kilométrico expedido por la Comisión Federal de Telecomunicaciones (Cofetel): “Lineamientos para la transición a la Radio Digital Terrestre (RDT), de las estaciones de radiodifusión sonora ubicadas dentro de la zona de 320 kilómetros de la frontera norte de México”. En él se autoriza a las estaciones de radio ubicadas en esa zona del territorio nacional para que adopten el estándar de radio digital que se emplea en Estados Unidos y cuyo nombre técnico es In Band on Channel (IBOC) pero se conoce de manera comercial como o High Definition
Radio (HD Radio).

AMERICAN RED CROSS TRAINS CROSS-BORDER TEAM / ANGELICA MARTINEZ / THE SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE
Mexican workers to aid response time. Mexican Red Cross members began training for disaster response in San Diego yesterday to become part of a pioneering cross-border team. A group of eight bilingual Mexican Red Cross staff members from Baja California met in Kearny Mesa for classroom-style sessions about the functions of the American Red Cross. The training is scheduled to continue through tomorrow. The idea for cross-border teams came from lessons learned during the wildfires in October, said Araceli Gaines, a response associate for the American Red Cross in Imperial Valley. At the time, Mexican firefighters who had already been training with firefighters here helped battle the flames near the border. The Red Cross hopes the same collaboration can improve and quicken its disaster response along both sides of the border, Gaines said.

LEGISLADORES LATINOS ACUSAN A CORRELIGIONARIOS DEMÓCRATAS DE APOYAR A GRUPOS ANTIINMIGRANTES / RICHARD S. DUNHAM / HOUSTON CHRONICLE
Miembros del 'Caucus' Hispano dicen que varios demócratas están preocupados por su reelección y han cedido a presiones de grupos opositores a la inmigración ilegal. Joe Baca, miembro de la Cámara de Representantes por el estado de California y presidente del Caucus Hispano del Congreso, está furioso. En una queja reciente, Baca aseguró que los latinos se han convertido en blanco de ataques de quienes están "mal informados" y "confundidos". Pero Baca no se refiere a aspirantes presidenciales republicanos o a los críticos antiinmigrantes más estridentes. El blanco de su ira es el liderazgo demócrata del Congreso. Baca y otros legisladores latinos en Washington están furiosos con algunos de sus colegas demócratas, y aseguran que no lo van a tolerar más.

BORDER UNION SUES CHERTOFF OVER FENCE / STEPHEN DINAN / THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Members of the Texas Border Coalition yesterday said Department of Homeland Security officials "lied" about reaching out to Texas landowners over the U.S.-Mexico border fence, and filed a class-action lawsuit against Secretary Michael Chertoff demanding he give landowners more say before the fence is built. Under the suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, the group of border mayors, county judges and community leaders said the federal government violated the rights of landowners and intimidated them into signing away, for a $100 payment, rights to come on their land and prepare for building the fence.

A lawsuit accused the Department of Homeland Security of violating property rights in acquiring land to build the fence separating Texas from Mexico. A coalition of Texas community leaders sued the Department of Homeland Security on Friday over the construction of a controversial fence on the Southwest border, saying the agency trampled the rights of property owners in acquiring land for the project. The suit, filed in a federal district court in Washington, accuses Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and agency officials of violating numerous laws and regulations and effectively coercing Texas property owners to turn over land for the fence without consultation.

A group of Texas cities and business groups has sued the Department of Homeland Security to stop the construction of a fence along the border with Mexico. The Texas Border Coalition, which includes the mayors of Eagle Pass, Brownsville, El Paso, Laredo and Hidalgo, filed the suit in federal court in Washington on Friday, asking a judge to block construction of 70 miles of border fences and walls in the Rio Grande Valley.

The U.S. Border Patrol is installing razor-sharp concertina wire atop border fencing between San Diego and Tijuana, marking a major shift in approach along a frequently violent stretch of the frontier. The triple-strand wire, meant to keep smugglers from attacking agents, will stretch five miles when completed this summer -- the longest expanse of this type of wire ever used on the Southwest border. Federal authorities in the past have avoided using fortifications with such negative symbolism. Hundreds of miles of barriers going up in other areas have had to meet "aesthetically pleasing" federal design standards. Critics say the new approach is inhumane and could leave illegal immigrants bloodied.

In the immigration debate, passion often gets the better part of reason. For evidence, look at the unintended consequences of a congressional measure meant to keep tax rebates out of the hands of undocumented immigrants. Feeling pressure from anti-illegal immigration activists in January, Congress tucked into the economic stimulus package a requirement that recipients of the rebates must have a valid Social Security number. In order to file a tax return, you must have either a Social Security number or an IRS-issued individual taxpayer identification number. Since it's easier for undocumented workers to obtain ITINs, the activists lobbied for the Social Security number prerequisite. Moreover, in the case of a couple using a “married filing jointly” return, both individuals must have valid Social Security numbers for either of them to qualify for the payment.

The nation's largest single immigration raid, resulting in nearly 400 arrests earlier this week, violated the constitutional rights of workers at a meatpacking plant, a federal lawsuit says. The lawsuit accuses the government of arbitrary and indefinite detention. It seeks to prevent the government from moving the arrested workers out-of-state as their cases wend through the system.A spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office said he couldn't comment on the lawsuit filed Thursday on behalf of about 147 of the workers rounded up Monday at an Agriprocessors Inc. meat processing plant.

ASIMILACIÓN SOCIAL DE EXTRANJEROS SE ACELERA / RODRIGO PARÍS / RUMBO
Los inmigrantes que han llegado a Estados Unidos en los últimos 25 años se asimilan más rápido al país de lo que lo hacían previas generaciones, de acuerdo a un estudio del Manhattan Institute. De acuerdo a las cifras del estudio, el proceso de éxito en la asimilación para el 2006 fue encabezado por inmigrantes de Canadá que lograron en los ámbitos económico y cultural una asimilación del 100%, y en lo cívico apenas un 43%. En dicha escala, los inmigrantes mexicanos para el mismo año habían logrado asimilarse en un 66% en el ámbito económico; 51% en el ámbito cultural y apenas un 22% en lo cívico.

"De los aproximadamente 32 mil habitantes con los que cuenta el municipio, el 20 o 25 por ciento de la población total, se encuentra radicando en los Estados Unidos, no tengo el dato exacto, pero aproximadamente esa es la cifra", reconoció el director de Desarrollo Social, José Alfonso Borja Pimentel.Por ello, el municipio de Jaral del Progreso, es el número uno en cuanto a las remesas que se reciben a través del Instituto de Seguridad Social del Estado de Guanajuato (ISSEG).Mencionó que no se tiene una cifra exacta de la cantidad de remesas que se reciben en el municipio, sin embargo, señaló que en días pasados, personal del ISSEG les informó que Jaral del Progreso es el municipio que mayor número de remesas recibe a través de este instituto, "lo cual consideramos que es benéfico en cuanto a los programas que el ISSEG nos pueda estar apoyando como son las farmacias".
