John McCain sólo se impuso en segmentos de la tercera edad. El presidente electo de EU, Barack Obama, ganó las elecciones del martes en parte gracias al apoyo del 67 por ciento de los hispanos, según datos preliminares, porcentaje muy por encima del que obtuvo George W. Bush en 2004. Obama agradeció ayer en internet el apoyo del voto de la comunidad hispana, que se inclinó por su rival republicano, John McCain, en 31 por ciento. El apoyo a Obama es superior al 53 por ciento que logró el también demócrata John Kerry en 2004 y que el 40 por ciento de Bush de ese mismo año. Al menos diez millones de latinos votaron el martes, un incremento del 32 por ciento sobre las presidenciales de 2004, algo que ayer celebraron distintos grupos defensores de los inmigrantes. El margen de victoria que los hispanos le ofrecieron a Obama es particularmente amargo para Bush y sus correligionarios, que presumieron del apoyo que consiguieron de los latinos en 2004.

LATINOS CON OBAMA / EL UNIVERSAL
El presidente electo Barack Obama, senador de Illinois, obtuvo muy buenos resultados entre los votantes hispanos, capturando 66% del voto. Entre los hispanos más jóvenes, la cifra fue de 76%. Los Latinos fueron una pieza clave para inclinar la balanza en estados clave a favor de Obama, incluyendo a Florida, Colorado, Nevada y Nuevo Mexico. También lo impulsaron en algunos lugares inesperados como Virginia y Pennsylvania. “Es un enorme indicador de la influencia del voto latino”, comentó Janet Murguia, presidenta y directora general del Consejo Nacional de La Raza, una organización de derechos civiles hispanos. “No hay duda de que hizo una diferencia importante en esta elección”.

ARRASA BARACK ENTRE VOTANTES HISPANOS / DIARIO DE MEXICO
El presidente electo de Estados Unidos Barack Obama, alcanzó un nuevo techo histórico en el apoyo de la comunidad latina de Estados Unidos, muy por encima del respaldo que obtuvo el demócrata John Kerry en 2004. Obama recibió el 66 por ciento del voto latino en las elecciones del 4 de noviembre, un aumento de 13 puntos porcentuales en relación con los votos hispanos sufragados para Kerry frente al presidente George W. Bush hace cuatro años. En contraste el senador John McCain tuvo el 31 por ciento de apoyo latino, de acuerdo con la Encuesta Nacional Electoral. Tanto Obama como McCain apoyan la reforma migratoria, pero el senador de Arizona se distanció del tema durante la campaña en lo que fue visto como un cortejo al sector más conservador de su Partido Republicano, que se opone a regularizar a los indocumentados.

LANZAN APOYO A MIGRANTES REPATRIADOS / RAFAEL CABRERA / REFORMA
Con un presupuesto de 15 millones de pesos, las Secretarías del Trabajo y Desarrollo Rural capitalinas otorgarán un seguro de desempleo a los migrantes que regresen a la Ciudad de México a causa de la crisis económica en Estados Unidos. Durante los últimos 8 meses, el Gobierno local ha reportado el regreso de al menos 110 familias al DF, por lo que se determinó crear un programa emergente de apoyo económico, explicó la titular de Desarrollo Rural, María Rosa Márquez Cabrera. Las familias que han vuelto a la Ciudad, informó la funcionaria, vivían en su mayoría en California, Illinois, Texas, Carolina del Norte y Nueva York, y se han establecido principalmente en las Delegaciones Álvaro Obregón, Gustavo A. Madero, Iztapalapa, Iztacalco y Venustiano Carranza.

PAGAN MAL EN EU A LOS MEXICANOS / ERNESTO SARABIA / REFORMA
La población de México que reside en Estados Unidos tiene un salario promedio anual de 24 mil 270 dólares, 52 por ciento menor que la remuneración que reciben ciudadanos que también viven ahí, pero son de Bermuda, Canadá y otros lugares de Norteamérica, según estimaciones por características laborales del Consejo Nacional de Población (Conapo). Ese ingreso también es 48 por ciento inferior al sueldo de la población residente que nació en la Unión Europea, lo que coloca al salario del mexicano como el más bajo entre las 10 regiones estudiadas. Según loscálculos del Conapo, en Estados Unidos viven alrededor de 10.9 millones de emigrantes mexicanos de 15 años y más.

As former Mexican President Vicente Fox's first ambassador to present credentials to the Bush administration, Bremer had requested that Monterrubio, then stationed in London, join him in Washington. The two were posted here between 2000 and 2004. "I cannot imagine a day during which I cannot be in contact with him," said Bremer, who had remained close with Monterrubio. "He was very central to all we tried to achieve. The ups, the downs, all the things I did in D.C. were done with him. He was engaged and an absolute asset." (….) Chenausky said he voted for Arpaio and Thomas because he is frustrated with illegal immigration and they seem to be the only ones doing anything about it Both Arpaio and Thomas vowed to continue to combat illegal immigration, and they suggested they may even step up their efforts in light of their victories. But the prospect of a new level of immigration enforcement disturbs civil-rights advocates. "These (Arpaio and Thomas) are folks who have terrorized our community," said Raul Yzaguirre, the former president of the National Council of La Raza, a Latino civil-rights organization, and now a professor at Arizona State University.

Andrea Bazán said she has thick skin and is not easily frightened by death threats. But when the Hispanic activist arrived home one day to find her voice mail packed with profanity, and when she noticed a man watching her house in Durham, N.C., from a white commercial van with no license plates, her heart started to pound. On a recent Monday night, she said, an unidentified man pounded on the front door of her house, frightening her. About a month earlier, on Labor Day, her house was broken into, and the smoke detectors were removed. "I am a mother. . . . I was scared," said Bazán, president of the Triangle Community Foundation in Durham and a board member for the National Council of La Raza. "I've been open with them about the fact that sometimes I have a bodyguard." For some Hispanic activists such as Bazán, this is lifeon the front lines of the debate over illegal immigration. Leaders of the largest Hispanic civil rights groups -- the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), and La Raza -- have received anonymous threats of violence and death. Bazán's home address and the names of her daughters were posted on a Web site.

LARGE IOWA MEATPACKER IN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT RAID FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY / JULIA PRESTON / THE NEW YORK TIMES
The kosher meatpacking company in Iowa that has been struggling with criminal charges and huge fines for labor violations, a dwindling work force and declining demand among Jewish consumers since an immigration raid at its main plant, has filed for bankruptcy. The filing late Tuesday by Agriprocessors Inc. signaled the demise of a company that has been operated by a single family: the owner, Aaron Rubashkin, and his son Sholom, who built the company into the country’s dominant supplier of kosher meat. The company began to founder after 389 illegal immigrants, about half its work force, were arrested on May 12 in a raid at its plant in Postville, Iowa. The immigrants reported under-age employees and what they said were abusive work conditions to the authorities. Although demand for Agriprocessors’ products declined after the raid, supermarkets and butcher shops nationwide supplying Jews who observe strict dietary laws reported shortages of kosher meat this week, after the plant stopped slaughtering cattle a week ago. Agriprocessors sells meat under the Rubashkin’s, Aaron’s Best and Shor Harbor labels, among others.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT DEPORTATIONS UP 7% IN COLO, WYO / THE DENVER POST
Federal agents say they deported more than 6,000 illegal immigrants from Colorado and Wyoming over the past 12 months, a 7 percent increase over the previous year. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Thursday that almost 60 percent of those deported had been convicted of other crimes. The report covers work by the agency's Denver office, which is responsible for Colorado and Wyoming. The report includes the federal fiscal year that ran from October 2007 through September 2008.

U.S. CITIZEN FINALLY RELEASED FROM CUSTODY IN L.A. / THE DENVER POST
A U.S. citizen who was held for two months in a Southern California detention center said immigration officials refused to believe his birth certificate was real. The 25-year-old Jose Ledesma said he's happy to be free after facing possible deportation. He was released Monday after U.S. immigration attorneys asked a judge to dismiss the case.

IN FLORIDA, AN INITIATIVE INTENDED TO END BIAS IS KILLED / DAMIEN CAVE / THE NEW YORK TIMES
An obscure ballot initiative in Florida intended to end a legacy of bias against Asian-Americans was defeated Tuesday, apparently because voters incorrectly assumed it would prevent illegal immigrants from owning property. Had it passed, the initiative, known as Amendment No. 1, would have removed from the state’s Constitution language adopted in 1926 allowing the Legislature to prohibit foreigners who were barred from citizenship — Asian-Americans at the time — from owning land. No such legislation was ever enacted here, and every other state that had such laws has scrapped them on grounds of equal protection. But on Tuesday, Florida’s effort to delete the provision went down, with 52 percent voting “no” and 48 percent voting “yes.” Immigrant advocates said they were stunned. “It’s terribly disappointing,” said Cheryl Little, executive director of the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center. “At a time when our country has turned away from a history of racism, we have left a racist and anti-immigrant provision in Florida’s Constitution.”

Trying to tap into the growing spending power of Hispanics and the popularity of warehouse shopping, Wal-Mart announced late last month that Houston will get the company’s first Mas Club.Mas means “more” in Spanish, and instead of the blue and white Sam’s Club logo, Mas signs will be red and green, the colors in the Mexican flag. (…)The Hispanic market has captured the attention of retailers because of its growing population. Last year, Hispanics had a buying power of $862 billion. That’s expected to increase to $1.2 trillion in 2012, according to the Selig Center for Economic Growth at the University of Georgia.

CHICAGO FIRE'S MCBRIDE, BLANCO AN ODD COUPLE / LUIS ARROYAVE / CHICAGO TRIBUNE
One is revered, the other reviled. One is arguably Major League Soccer's biggest villain. The other is an American soccer hero. Together, Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Brian McBride have been making the Fire a hard team to like — or dislike. McBride is the former U.S. forward with a knack for scoring goals. The three-time World Cup veteran earned respect from peers and fans for his success in England's Premier League as well as his tendency to put his body on the line. "McBride is one of the more honest players we've had," Fire forward Chris Rolfe said. "He'll get fouled and will try to stay on his feet." Some believe Blanco does the exact opposite.

REFORMA MIGRATORIA REQUERIRÁ MUCHO ESFUERZO: PELOSI / LA VOZ DE MICHOACÁN
La presidenta de la Cámara de Representantes de Estados Unidos, Nancy Pelosi, afirmó que "requerirá mucho esfuerzo" encauzar la reforma migratoria en la próxima sesión legislativa que comienza en enero y que tendrá que ser de forma "bipartidista". Pelosi aseguró en una rueda de prensa que la oposición demócrata, que logró ampliar su mayoría en ambas cámaras del Congreso, gobernará "desde el centro" en las principales prioridades legislativas del partido.

REVIVE TRIUNFO DE OBAMA LA ESPERANZA A INMIGRANTES / EL DIARIO DE JUÁREZ (CHIHUAHUA)
La elección del afroestadounidense Barack Obama como presidente de Estados Unidos significa para la comunidad extranjera en este país un orgullo y la esperanza de un cambio en sus condiciones de vida, consideró ayer una coalición proinmigrante en ese país. En México,la canciller Patricia Espinosa, dijo que mantendrá contacto con el equipo de transición de Barack Obama, para conversar en todos los niveles y sobre temas como migración y la Iniciativa Mérida. La titular de la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE) dijo que promoverá una reunión entre el presidente Felipe Calderón y Obama lo antes posible, pues a ambas naciones “nos une algo mucho más grande e importante que una larga línea fronteriza”. Espinosa Cantellano insistió que el tema migratorio es central en la agenda con Estados Unidos.

'EL TRIUNFO DE OBAMA ES EL DE LOS MIGRANTES' / VIRIDIANA LÓPEZ / LA VOZ DE MICHOACÁN
El triunfo de Barack Obama en las elecciones presidenciales de Estados Unidos no sólo es del pueblo norteamericano, sino de América Latina e incluso del mundo y en especial de los migrantes, coincidieron líderes michoacanos radicados en la Unión Americana, quienes confían que habrá una reforma migratoria en aquel país para beneficio de los migrantes, quienes aun cuando reconocen que el gobierno norteamericano tiene otras prioridades, ya han comenzado a organizarse para sacar adelante una reforma legal en la material. En entrevista vía telefónica, José Luis Gutiérrez, director de la Oficina de Nuevos Americanos en Illinois, manifestó que el triunfo de Obama este 4 de noviembre sirve además para que la comunidad migrante “aprendamos de su victoria”, esperando con esto que algún día llegue un latinoamericano, en especial un mexicano, a ocupar la silla presidencial de la Casa Blanca.

REBASA EXPECTATIVAS LA PARTICIPACIÓN LATINA / LA VOZ DE MICHOACÁN
Según datos publicados por el Consejo Nacional de la Raza, más de 10 millones de votantes latinos acudieron a las urnas para elegir al presidente de Estados Unidos. El presidente electo, Barack Obama, agradeció ayer en un mensaje en español el apoyo mostrado por la comunidad hispana a lo largo de la larga campaña electoral que finalmente lo ha llevado a la Casa Blanca. “Juntos llegamos a la meta. Juntos le demostramos al país -y al resto del mundo- que el cambio es posible”, señaló el demócrata en un texto publicado en su página web.
