EMPLAZAN A OBAMA A PARAR REDADAS / SILVIA GARDUÑO / REFORMA
Organizaciones a favor de los derechos de los migrantes en Estados Unidos entregaron una carta abierta al presidente Barack Obama, en la que le exigen que tome acción en el tema migratorio en los primeros 100 días de su Gobierno. Los organismos de la Red Nacional para los Derechos de los Inmigrantes y los Refugiados (NNIRR por sus siglas en inglés) pidieron al Mandatario poner un alto a las redadas, detenciones y deportaciones, e impulsar políticas humanitarias.

OBAMA Y LAS REDADAS / EDUARDO GONZÁLEZ VELÁZQUEZ / LA JORNADA
Ya no hay tiempo para llegar, Barack Obama despacha en la oficina oval de la Casa Blanca. Ya no hay tiempo de espera, las promesas de campaña tendrán que transformarse en acciones de gobierno. Ya no hay tiempo para la especulación, los problemas son demasiados y muy complejos, y la sociedad estadounidense y el mundo en general exigen soluciones. Así de urgente es la tarea que tiene a cuestas el presidente de Estados Unidos: la mayor recesión económica de los últimos ochenta años; dos guerras que parecen no tener fin; la violación sistemática a los derechos humanos en nombre de la “lucha contra el terrorismo”; un déficit fiscal que vulnera la estabilidad de las finanzas estadounidenses; una migración indocumentada de mexicanos y latinoamericanos en general que no se detiene ni ante las difíciles condiciones económicas del vecino del norte, ni la militarización de la frontera, ni la construcción del muro. Según las diferentes encuestas levantadas desde el año pasado, para la sociedad norteamericana en su conjunto, incluida la población de origen latino, el principal problema que se debe solucionar es el económico.

CAEN EN 2 MILLONES LAS REMESAS VÍA TELECOM / MIRIAM POSADA GARCÍA / LA JORNADA
Entre 2007 y 2008 Telecomm Telégrafos registró 2 millones de operaciones menos de recepción de remesas, enviadas por mexicanos que viven en el extranjero a sus familiares. El organismo dependiente de la Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) señaló que en 2007 recibió remesas mediante 68.8 millones de operaciones, cifra que para 2008 se redujo a 65.9 millones, 2 millones menos que el año previo. Telecomm Telégrafos tiene mil 591 oficinas telegráficas en todo el país, de las cuales cuatro de cada diez se encuentran en poblaciones donde no operan bancos.

LANZA MEXICANA REFUGIADA EN CHICAGO GRITO DE AYUDA A OBAMA / FINANCIERO
La mexicana indocumentada Flor Crisóstomo, quien este miércoles cumplirá un año refugiada en una iglesia local, lanzará un grito de ayuda al presidente estadounidense Barack Obama para que éste detenga las redadas y las deportaciones. En entrevista, Crisóstomo dijo que pretende conmemorar sus 12 meses como refugiada -en la misma iglesia donde estuvo refugiada la también mexicana Elvira Arellano- con el envío de una carta a Obama para pedir un alto a esas medidas antiinmigrantes.

DUEÑO DE FÁBRICA DE EU ES SENTENCIADO EN CASO DE INDOCUMENTADOS / EL UNIVERSAL
El propietario de una fábrica de artículos de piel fue sentenciado el martes a un año de prisión por albergar y ocultar a inmigrantes ilegales en la planta que fue registrada por agentes en el 2007. Francesco Insolia, quien se había declarado culpable en noviembre, dijo en la corte que era totalmente responsable de no haber emprendido ninguna acción luego de ser informado de que en su fábrica de New Bedford trabajaban inmigrantes ilegales. ``Soy responsable de la conducta``, dijo Insolia, mientras escuchaban más de 30 seguidores emocionados. ``Nunca en mi peor pesadilla hubiera pensado que me encontraría en la posición que me encuentro hoy``, señaló.

PROPONEN EN UTAH ESTUDIAR IMPACTO ECONÓMICO DE INDOCUMENTADOS / FINANCIERO
Un legislador estatal de Utah pidió que se analice el impacto económico que los inmigrantes indocumentados tienen y tendrán en ese estado durante los próximos 25 años antes de implementar a mediados de este año leyes migratorias locales. El representante Stephen Clark (R-Provo), presentó el lunes el proyecto HB09-107 en el que pide que la legislatura apruebe un presupuesto de 150 mil dólares para completar el estudio de los ingresos y gastos que las personas indocumentadas generan para el gobierno de Utah y otras jurisdicciones. Si los legisladores aprueban el pedido de Clark, se postergará entonces la implementación de la ley SB08-81, ya aprobada el año pasado y que deberá entrar en vigor el 1 de julio de este año.

RECHAZA NCLR VERIFICACIÓN DE EMPLEO A HISPANOS / LA CRÓNICA
El Consejo Nacional de La Raza (NCLR) pidió al Congreso de Estados Unidos que excluya del paquete de estímulo económico un programa de verificación de empleo que afectaría a muchos inmigrantes. Señaló que en la Cámara de Representantes hay una enmienda que requiere que las entidades que reciben fondos federales verifiquen electrónicamente el Seguro Social de los trabajadores. "En lugar de trabajar hacia una rápida recuperación económica", varios legisladores "están jugando a la política", mientras los trabajadores ya afectados por la crisis "pagarán el precio de esos errores", indicó.

NUEVOS VUELOS DE AEROMÉXICO A EU Y CANADÁ / LA CRÓNICA
Aeroméxico anunció el lanzamiento de tres nuevos vuelos a Estados Unidos (Denver, Las Vegas y San Francisco) y uno a Canadá (Toronto), así como el aumento de frecuencias en varias rutas internas. La empresa volará diariamente a San Francisco a partir del 11 de febrero, a Denver el 2 de marzo, y a Toronto el 3 de marzo. En el caso de Las Vegas lo hará los jueves y domingos a partir del 28 de enero, y "en breve" presentará otros destinos a Norteamérica y a Sudamérica. También a partir del 9 de febrero la aerolínea ofrecerá tres vuelos diarios desde Toluca a Guadalajara y Monterrey.

SEMARNAT BUSCA TRABAJAR CON EU EN EL TEMA ECOLÓGICO / ANGÉLICA ENCISO L. / LA JORNADA
El titular de la Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (Semarnat), Juan Elvira Quesada, consideró que el país podrá buscar la armonización de las normas de desempeño ambiental de la industria automotriz y anunció que impulsará una reunión trinacional de la región de América del Norte para trabajar en temas de cambio climático y bonos de carbono. Entrevistado tras la inauguración de la exposición Viviendo tu futuro. Tu futuro en tren, que se inauguró ayer en las instalaciones de la terminal Buenavista del tren suburbano, el funcionario dijo que ya ha buscado un acercamiento con la actual titular de la Agencia de Protección de Ambiental de Estados Unidos, Lisa Jackson.

NI SÍ NI NO A PEDIDO DE MORATORIA A REDADAS/ MARIBEL HASTINGS/ LA OPINIÓN
Napolitano dice que no es momento para tocar el tema. La Secretaria del Departamento de Seguridad Interna (DHS), Janet Napolitano, declaró ayer que no puede decir "sí o no" a una posible suspensión de las redadas porque están en medio de una exhaustiva revisión de las políticas de aplicación de leyes migratorias en los centros de trabajo. Sobre las posibilidades reales de una suspensión de las redadas como lo están solicitando grupos de presión, Napolitano afirmó que "no voy a decir sí o no en este punto..No es el momento apropiado". "Lo que estoy diciendo es que estamos examinando cuál es el mecanismo más efectivo para aplicar las leyes migratorias en los centros de trabajo". Napolitano tuvo un breve encuentro con algunos medios tras dirigirse a los empleados del Servicio de Inmigración y Aduanas (USCIS), a una semana de haber asumido las riendas del masivo DHS. Asimismo, Napolitano dijo desconocer cuándo avanzará la reforma migratoria integral porque la pregunta es "cuándo el presidente y el Congreso quieren abordarlo".

GILLIBRAND DRAWS FIRE OVER IMMIGRATION VIEWS / SEWELL CHAN / NEW YORK TIMES
During her one term in the House of Representatives, from a largely rural, traditionally Republican district, Kirsten E. Gillibrand was on safe political ground adopting a tough stance against illegal immigration. Ms. Gillibrand, a Democrat, opposed any sort of amnesty for illegal immigrants, supported deputizing local law enforcement officers to enforce federal immigration laws, spoke out against Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s proposal to allow illegal immigrants to have driver’s licenses and sought to make English the official language of the United States. But since her appointment by Gov. David A. Paterson last week to fill the Senate seat vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton, Ms. Gillibrand has found herself besieged by immigrant advocates and Democratic colleagues who have cast her as out of step with a majority of the state, with its big cities and sprawling immigrant enclaves. Immediately after the announcement, liberal blogs and New York’s ethnic media lit up with complaints about Ms. Gillibrand’s positions. A group of Hispanic state lawmakers have threatened to support a primary challenger to Ms. Gillibrand, who must stand for election next year. And El Diario La Prensa, the Spanish-language daily, described her as “a disappointing choice.”

REMESAS DE MEXICANOS CAEN POR PRIMERA VEZ UN 3,6% / E. EDUARDO CASTILLO / EL NUEVO HERALD
Las remesas que los mexicanos envían desde el exterior registraron una caída histórica de 3,6% en 2008, en medio de una crisis financiera mundial. El banco central de México informó el martes que los envíos, en su mayoría desde Estados Unidos, alcanzaron los 25.145 millones de dólares frente a los poco más de 26.000 millones de dólares el año anterior. El director de Medición Económica del Banco de México, Jesús Cervantes, anticipó que en 2009 se mantendrá la tendencia negativa. Esta es la primera vez que las remesas, la segunda fuente de divisas del país sólo detrás del petróleo, tienen una caída desde que el banco comenzó a registrarlas en 1995. Sólo en diciembre, las remesas ascendieron a 1.776 millones de dólares, una caída de 9,82% respecto al mismo mes de 2007. (…) Se estima que un 21,2% de los inmigrantes mexicanos trabajan en la construcción y 15,9% en manufacturas.

Over the past decade, entire towns in Mexico have been rebuilt with money sent from immigrants or migrant workers living in the US. Now, for the first time since Mexico's Central Bank began keeping records (13 years ago), total annual remittances from the US have fallen. (….) And it will impact millions of families whose entire incomes depend on the dollars sent from men and women working as construction workers, lettuce pickers, and housekeepers from California to New York. (…)The slackened economy in the US is a major factor in the decline in remittances, especially from the construction industry, which has traditionally employed some 20 percent of Mexican migrants. Immigrants' remittances drop for the first time. Freddy Arroyo returned to his home in the village of La Parota, Michoacán, two weeks ago, penniless. The Mexico native spent months scrapping for work at Houston’s day labor sites, trying to save money to send back to his wife, who was nearly nine months pregnant when he left home. He stuck it out in Houston after his daughter was born last spring, hoping to find work painting houses, but gave up this month and headed home. “He came back because there was no work,” said Catalina Orozco, Arroyo’s wife. As the global recession takes its toll on immigrant earning power, workers like Arroyo are returning to Mexico, while others are sending less money or no money home.

US-MEXICO BORDER FENCE NEARS COMPLETION / EILEEN SULLIVAN / ARIZONA DAILY STAR
The fence along the U.S.-Mexico border is mostly finished. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Lloyd Easterling said 601 miles of the project had been completed as of a week ago. Easterling said 69 miles of the fence still must be built to meet the goal set during the Bush administration. In December Barack Obama, then president-elect, said he wanted to evaluate border-security operations before he considers whether to finish building the fence under his administration. Easterling said the Obama White House has not told Homeland Security to stop building the fence. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has said a fence alone will not stop illegal immigration along the 2,000-mile border. About half of the fence has been built in Arizona, where Napolitano was governor. The overall plan for security on the Southwest border — set by the Bush administration — includes additional Border Patrol agents, more enforcement of immigration laws, the fence and a high-tech "virtual fence" using surveillance technology.

NIÑOS AYUNAN PARA EVITAR DEPORTACIÓN / AL DIA
Cecia y Ronald Soza, dos hermanitos de padres nicaragüenses, no paran de llorar desde que su mamá fue detenida en diciembre por las autoridades de inmigración. Desesperados por tenerla nuevamente con ellos, comenzaron una huelga de hambre y están rogándole al presidente Barack Obama que frene la deportación de la mujer. Maricela Soza, la mamá de los niños, fue detenida en su propia casa por su condición de indocumentada y tiene una orden para ser deportada el jueves. Cecia, de 12 años, y Ronald, de nueve, esperan que Obama los escuche para que su mamá salga de la prisión de inmigrantes en la que está y pueda quedarse en Estados Unidos a vivir con ellos.

ANOTHER MANAGER AT IOWA KOSHER SLAUGHTERHOUSE CHARGED WITH VIOLATIONS OF CHILD LABOR LAWS/ AMY LORENTZEN/ ORLANDO SENTINEL
Nearly a thousand new charges have been filed in the state's prosecution of alleged child labor violations at a kosher meatpacking plant in northeast Iowa. The 954 new charges were filed Jan. 16 against Jeffrey Heasley, a beef production supervisor at the Agriprocessors Inc. plant in Postville. They include alleged child labor violations of employing minors in a meatpacking establishment and for exposing minors to dangerous or poisonous chemicals.(…) Agriprocessors — the nation's biggest kosher meatpacking plant — was raided by immigration authorities last May 12. Nearly 400 people were arrested, most of them Guatemalan and Mexican nationals.

PROCESAR LA VISA-U/ DIARIO HOY
La Visa-U es un recurso que nació de una propuesta de las autoridades estadounidenses para hacer más eficiente la cooperación de los residentes indocumentados en la investigación de un cierto tipo de crímenes, sobre todo violentos. La idea era buena, el gobierno obtenía información y testigos, y los inmigrantes obtenían protección y la posibilidad de residir en el país de manera legal.(…) La participación de los inmigrantes en los procesos judiciales es benéfica y necesaria. No solo por el tamaño de esta población, sino porque muchos de ellos se ven expuestos a ser víctimas de extorsión por su estatus migratorio.

EL INGLÉS NO SERÁ LA ÚNICA OPCIÓN EN VARIAS CIUDADES/ DIARIO HOY
La política de "inglés solamente" ha sufrido un revés en Nashville (Tennessee) y a nivel estatal en Iowa, lo que, según expertos es un indicio de un posible cambio de estrategia frente a la inmigración.El pasado 22 de enero, los votantes de Nashville rechazaron por un margen de 57 por ciento a 43 la propuesta de establecer al inglés como el único idioma oficial para todas las comunicaciones de la ciudad.

For all the grief Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is taking from the right for proposing to raise taxes, you would think he was a fiscal softy who is willing to let state spending grow out of control. But take a close look at his budget and you might be surprised at the level of spending cuts that would still be required to balance the books – even if the Legislature passes a big tax hike.(…) The governor's plan would also eliminate most state support for legal immigrants (illegal immigrants don't get welfare or social services), reduce child care subsidies and cut county funds for administration. Finally, the governor proposes to shift about $275 million in tobacco tax revenue from local children's programs to state programs for kids.

CHAMBER SIGNS MEMO WITH MEXICAN GROUP/ SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS
The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce signed a memo of understanding Tuesday with the Asociación de Empresarios Mexicanos to create program links with the organization of Mexican entrepreneurs. Chamber officials said the agreement will create first-time bonds between the organizations. The groups committed themselves to work together on business education, best practices, bicultural events and marketing initiatives. Both Richard Perez, president of the chamber, and Irene de Keegan, executive director of the asociación, applauded the agreement. De Keegan said the asociación represents thousands of Mexican entrepreneurs who call San Antonio home.

GREGORY NAVA'S FILM 'EL NORTE' MARKS 25TH ANNIVERSARY / REED JOHNSON / LOS ANGELES TIMES
When Gregory Nava's "El Norte" opened in U.S. theaters 25 years ago, immigration was less of a political hot-button issue than it is today. Back then, the mass exodus of refugees from Central American countries such as El Salvador and Guatemala was driven as much by civil war as by economics. California's Proposition 187 in 1994 and the pro-immigration marches of May 2006 still were years away. But in recent months, until the global economic swoon took center stage, immigration became one of the most pressing and polarizing issues on the national agenda. That gives a renewed potency to Nava's $750,000 independent movie about a Guatemalan brother and sister's harrowing odyssey to the United States -- including a memorably grueling crawl through a rat-infested tunnel -- and their struggles in adapting to their new life in Los Angeles. (…)As novelist and Times columnist Héctor Tobar points out in an essay in a program booklet accompanying the Criterion release, in the early 1980s Hollywood produced a handful of films examining these conflicts, such as "Missing," "Under Fire" and "Salvador." But their protagonists typically were non-Latinos. "El Norte" broke from this pattern by making the young siblings played by Mexican actors Zaide Silvia Gutierrez and David Villalpando the center of the action.

DAVIS ST. SE MODERNIZA PERO A COSTA DE LATINOS / IGNACIO LAGUARDA / AL DÍA
Dentro de pocos años, la calle Davis en Oak Cliff podría quedar irreconocible, lo cual es bueno o malo dependiendo a quién le pregunte. Cerca de la intersección de las calles Davis y Bishop las tiendas modernas y restaurantes de moda han desplazado a pequeños comercios de familias latinas. Donde estaba el mercado hispano La Familia ahora se encuentra un restaurante Café Brazil (que a pesar de su nombre no ofrece comida de Sudamérica). El Mini Bazar a poca distancia también desapareció, lo mismo que el restaurante mexicano Jaci's, y los comercios latinos restantes se quejan de una baja en su clientela.

EL SAGUARITO OFFERS HEALTHIER MEXICAN FARE, FUN FORTUNES / VALERIE VINYARD / ARIZONA DAILY STAR
The taco fortune cookies first caught our eye at El Saguarito. Modeled after Chinese fortune cookies, except shaped like a mini taco, the cinnamon-laced treats made in Douglas contained vague, humorous or inspiring statements in English and Spanish. One "fortune": "The wife cried for her husband and now she cries because he has come back." It helps to have shtick to stand out in the crowd of Mexican restaurants in Tucson. Like fortune tacos. And like being a "healthy Mexican food alternative." All of El Saguarito's dishes are cooked with canola oil rather than lard or other animal fats. Owner Albert Vasquez, 53, decided to use only canola oil partly because his wife is a vegetarian but also for health reasons. Located in the former Corleone's near the University of Arizona, El Saguarito has a spacious dining room and outdoor patios. It also still has concession business and catering.

REGRESAN MIXTECOS POR FALTA DE EMPLEO EN EU / EDWIN GARCÍA / EL IMPARCIAL (OAXACA)
Actualmente la situación de los paisanos radicados en la Unión Americana es muy difícil, “por que además de la crisis económica que estamos viviendo, ya no tenemos trabajo y si lo hacemos no estamos en turnos completos, eso desespera y te llena de incertidumbre, por lo que decidimos regresarnos a nuestra tierra, ya habrá algo que hacer para sobrevivir” dijo Liborio Palacios Vargas, migrante oriundo de Santiago Ayuquililla. Por su parte, Rufino Romero Gonzáles, también migrante mixteco, añadió que el trabajo en Estados Unidos, principalmente en el área de California, lugar donde radicó durante algunos años, tuvo una disminución de trabajo en un 50%, lo que a muchos hispanos ha desesperado y los ha obligado a regresar, “aunque aquí estamos desempleados pero estamos con nuestras familias” añadió.

El plazo otorgado por el Gobierno Federal a los ex trabajadores migratorios conocidos como “braceros” para registrarse en las mesas receptoras y poder acceder al Fideicomiso del Fondo Social creado para compensarles la pérdida de sus ahorros, terminará hoy. Sin embargo, debido a que muchos se quedaron sin registrarse por las largas distancias y el rechazo que aplicaron los funcionarios federales a numerosos ex braceros juarenses que acudieron a la capital a realizar el trámite, la Coordinadora Regional Fronteriza (Coref) y el Centro de Trabajadores Agrícolas exigieron al Gobierno Federal ampliar el plazo para que más gente alcance a registrarse.

MEXICANO ACUSA A ‘MIGRA’ DE HERIRLO / EL DIARIO DE JUÁREZ (CHIHUAHUA)
Un indocumentado mexicano, que se encuentra grave en un hospital de Mexicali, Baja California, aseguró haber sido herido de bala por un agente de la Patrulla Fronteriza de Estados Unidos en la zona limítrofe entre San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora y San Luis, Arizona. El lesionado es Armando Loredo Murrieta, de 23 años de edad y habitante de ese municipio del noroeste de Sonora, a quien el médico, Juan Casillas diagnosticó con un balazo que le atravesó el pulmón y que por lo tanto pone en peligro su vida. De acuerdo a un reporte de la Policía Municipal de San Luis Río Colorado, elaborado por los tripulantes de la patrulla 830, Loredo Murrieta brincó la cerca internacional cerca de las 05:00 de la mañana del lunes, en el punto conocido como “Puente Quemado”, pero tuvo que regresar a territorio mexicano tras ser descubierto por una unidad de la Patrulla Fronteriza.

MINISTER SAYS FARM INDUSTRY MUST PUSH SAFETY/ CALGARY HERALD
Alberta's agriculture minister plans to examine a fatality inquiry recommendation calling on the province to include paid farm workers in safety legislation, but said the push to implement any changes will have to come from the industry itself. George Groeneveld said he will discuss the idea with the minister of employment and immigration, as well as consult with people in the industry.

No, Jesus would not have stopped this one-sided basketball game. After the game, He would have taught the losing team to play better. Similarly, referring to Rudyard Griffiths' article on immigration ["More than we can handle," Jan. 27], Jesus would have helped the immigrants prosper in their own land, not bring them to Canada to struggle here. The quality of mercy and charity really means handing people a fishing rod, not a fish. In our rush to help the underprivileged, we have forgotten a crucial part of that lesson.

A REFRESHER COURSE ON WHAT CANADIAN MEANS/ LEONARD STERN/ THE WINDSOR STAR
It's tricky talking about national character, because nations are big and diverse places. Yet the Obama inauguration conveyed some attributes that are quintessentially American. The U.S. is a confident, Christian country, as was clear from Rev. Rick Warren's prayer. Never in the Canada of today would the swearing-in of a prime minister be accompanied by a blessing invoking Jesus Christ.(….) The Canadian government, it turns out, has informally codified the meaning of Canadian citizenship, in a document titled A Look At Canada. The 47-page booklet is given to people seeking to become Canadian. I know that journalists are supposed to be cynical, but I quite like this document. (….) These values, according to A Look At Canada, are core Canadian values, which newcomers are expected to adopt in order to acquire citizenship. Yet many current Canadians are indifferent to, or even reject, those values. We simply inherited our citizenship, having been being born on Canadian soil or to a Canadian parent. Even if we think this is the worst country in the world, we are Canadian. Our citizenship exists independent of our beliefs and allegiances. But for immigrants, to obtain Canadian citizenship they have to commit publicly to Canadian values. (…..)

COPEMAN DID NOTHING ABOUT SCHOOL INJUSTICE/ TONY KONDAKS/THE GAZETTE
Russell Copeman argues that it is best for the anglophone community's interests if our MNAs work within the Liberal caucus. He chides Robert Libman and myself for making a mountain out of a Bill 104 molehill because, as even we admitted, it affects only a tiny number of students. OK, then, Mr. Copeman: What about a policy that affects 10,000 students? Immigrants from French-speaking countries, who received their primary education in French, can come to any province but Quebec, become citizens, and have the constitutional right to send their children to French publicly-funded schools. But immigrants from English-speaking countries, who received their primary education in English and come to Quebec and become citizens, do not have the constitutional right to send their children to English publicly-funded schools.

GOVERNMENT JOBS JUST A CLICK AWAY/ IRIS WINSTON/ THE OTTAWA CITIZEN
A good place to start a search for a job in the public sector at any level is the computer screen, Iris Winston learns. Joanne Lalonde first worked for the federal government when she was a student at the University of Ottawa, and the experience determined the direction of her career. Today, almost two decades later, she is the director general of national client services for the Public Service Commission. And the Federal Student Work Employment Program (FSWEP) that provided her with her earliest experience in the public service is one of several major programs under her jurisdiction.(….) There are over 250,000 federal public service jobs across Canada in over 1,600 locations and 150 countries," says Ms. Lalonde. Public sector jobs are also available at the provincial and municipal levels. For example, the British Columbia provincial government employs close to 30,000 employees in 280 communities around the province in more than 100 career streams, says Murray Coell, B.C.'s Minister of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development. A MISSED CHANCE TO BUILD TOWARD CANADA'S FUTURE/ THE GLOBE AND MAIL
Yesterday's federal budget succeeds in giving a well-placed priority to lower-income Canadians, but does not choose enough public investments of the kind that will help create a truly modern Canadian economy that could - and should - emerge from the current recession. (….)As it stands, this country is not making good enough use of the skills of its recent immigrants. Some are demoralized and alienated as a result. Given Canada's slow population growth, the nation's economic growth - and indeed the existing population's own retirement savings - will depend on highly productive immigrants, not underemployed or under-deployed ones.(….)
